Replayed the answers in your head. Spotted one or two you’d change but nothing catastrophic. Told your parents it went well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 1, fine. Day 2, still fine. Day 3, you check your email for the first time before chai. Day 5, you’re checking between every other activity. For banking and financial services: 2 to 4 weeks minimum, sometimes 6 weeks for PSU roles where everything moves through committees. For BPO and customer service roles: 3 to 7 days, sometimes same day for mass hiring drives. FMCG and manufacturing companies in Manesar, Bhiwandi, Coimbatore: 10 to 20 business days depending on how many rounds are left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are ranges, not promises. A company that tells you “we’ll respond in a week” might take 3 weeks. A company that says nothing might call you in 2 days. The stated timeline and the actual timeline have a complicated relationship in Indian corporate hiring. They’re aware of each other. They’re just not friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here’s something that genuinely frustrates anyone who’s watched this process from the inside. About 30 to 40% of companies in India don’t send rejection emails at all. The application just… dies. No closure. No “thank you for your time.” Nothing. You’re left to figure it out yourself after enough silence has passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s not acceptable. But it is common. And the practical takeaway is this: if 3 weeks have passed with no response after you’ve followed up once, assume the answer is no and redirect your energy. Don’t keep the hope alive like a diya in the wind. Apply elsewhere. Talk to more companies. The candidate who waits 6 weeks for one company while ignoring 20 other openings is the candidate who ends up with nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And this is the mistake freshers make exactly once. They interview somewhere, feel good about it, and stop applying to other places because it feels disloyal or premature or because they don’t want to juggle multiple processes. That instinct is understandable. It’s also career suicide. Never stop applying because one interview went well. The offer letter is the finish line. A small thing that changes the entire waiting experience: ask the interviewer about timeline before you leave the room. “Could you give me a sense of what the next steps look like and when I might hear back?” That question does two things. The follow-up email is short. Four sentences max. Reference the role, the date you interviewed, express continued interest, ask if there’s an update. Nothing about how the role is your dream job.
