Job Description

A sales manager's roles and responsibilities include developing sales strategies, setting and monitoring sales targets, and managing and coaching the sales team. They also analyze sales data, recruit and train staff, build customer relationships, and report performance to senior management. 

Strategic and planning responsibilities

  • Develop and implement sales strategies: Create plans and action items to achieve revenue goals.
  • Set sales targets: Establish sales quotas and performance goals for the team and individuals.
  • Analyze sales data: Monitor performance, generate reports, and use data to forecast sales and inform strategy.
  • Identify new opportunities: Analyze market trends and competitor activities to find new business and growth areas. 

Team management and development

  • Recruit and hire: Find and hire new sales representatives.
  • Train and coach: Provide training, ongoing coaching, and mentorship to improve team skills.
  • Motivate the team: Inspire and incentivize the sales staff to meet and exceed goals.
  • Manage performance: Conduct performance reviews and provide feedback to help team members improve.
  • Allocate territories: Assign sales territories or areas to sales representatives. 

Customer and operational responsibilities

  • Build customer relationships: Maintain and develop relationships with key clients.
  • Oversee the sales process: Manage the entire sales pipeline from lead generation to closing deals.
  • Resolve customer issues: Address and resolve customer complaints and concerns.
  • Collaborate with other departments: Work with marketing, product, and other teams to align strategies.
