Job Description
Duties and Responsibilities
General
Duty Doctor is the most responsible member of staff of the Hospital and is present all times of the day and night on his/her shift duty.As such no moment the Hospital can be left uncovered by Duty doctor .Even at the end of his/her shift,he/she will not leave the post until other RMO takes over the position.
• A professional approach must be adopted with all patients, staff and attendant.
• He/She has responsible for all pt.admitted in his/her department toward proper medical care
• He/She will ensure that all advised test & procedures are carried out without any delay
• On admission or Emergency case, he/she will examine the patients before admit after that carry out necessary examination & history taking so that the case sheet of pt. is completed in all respect & ensure that the patients documents consents are complete or not.
• He/She his/herself should take round of all the patients under his/her care at least twice a day & as often as necessary. He/she will also accompany the consultants,when they come on round & will ensure that all his/her orders carried out.
• Discharge summary of the patients who is going to be discharged is to be prepared by Duty doctor & should be signed by the consultant and Duty Doctor both.
• He/She should take feedback from all patients who already discharge after a week call them & pass information to the hospital HR or Management.
• Duty Doctors must work within their level of experience and competence and highlight verbally and in writing to the nurse in charge.
• To provide medical cover, routine and emergency, during hours of duty and work in conjunction with the other Duty doctor to provide a 24 hour service to the hospital.
• To take history of patient in OPD area explain medicine taking BP etc.
• To assess urgent admissions as required when the relevant consultant is not immediately available.
• To undertake a morning or evening ward round daily and if possible with a member of the nursing staff when available ensuring patients are visited where appropriate.
• To receive a hand-over report on patients from the alternative duty doctor when commencing duty and to attend the ward areas between the duty hours (morning evening & night) to enable and establish consultant communication .
• The duty doctor can spend time in OT, observing procedures if agreed by the Consultant and Ward Manager. The DUTY DOCTOR must be available to return to the ward and departments if required
Consultants
• To assist Consultant in Doctors Chambers ,write medicine give instruction to patients. As consultant directed explain medicine to patients. Solve their queries related health.
• To communicate any medical problems or concerns to Consultants.
• To act, as may be reasonably required, on behalf of the Consultant in their absence when requested
Nursing staff and patients
Ward duty doctor liaise with nursing staff regularly to check on patient progress, or more frequently if their condition necessitates. To see patients at the request of nurses in charge and carry out examinations of patients.
To supervise the daily clinical management of all patients in conjunction with the nurse team leaders and under the guidance of Consultants and attend all post operative patients on day of operation and every day following.
To respond to calls from the ward relating to patient care.
To discuss medication on discharge with patients and write a discharge summary if requested.
To assist in the day to day functions at the hospital and any other reasonable tasks, within their level of experience, requested by the hospital.
All patient information is confidential and must be respected as all times. The Duty Doctor should be able to interpret Consultant and nursing staff requests.
