Periyar University has been debarred by the UGC from offering online programs for the academic years 2024 to 2026. However, admissions for the ODL mode for the academic year 2025-26 are expected to commence soon. The university has recently published the results for the February 2025 Online Learning Programmes examinations. As per recent UGC guidelines, students are now required to create an ABC ID for admission, and universities will conduct admissions twice a year. The university also follows the UGC's 100% fee refund policy.

Periyar University, a government university established in 1997 in Salem, Tamil Nadu, is named after the social reformer E.V. Ramasamy 'Thanthai Periyar'. It is a prominent institution in the southern region, covering four districts: Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, and Krishnagiri.
