Role Overview

Robot Programmer / PLC Programmer is responsible for the programming, integration, and troubleshooting of robotic systems and PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) in an industrial environment. In addition to programming, this role requires proficiency in electrical systems, enabling the technician to perform electrical installations, maintenance, and diagnostics as part of their responsibilities.


Key Responsibilities:


Robot Programming and Integration

 Program and configure robotic systems (industrial robots, automated cells, etc.) for various tasks based on specific application needs, ensuring optimal performance and safety.

 Integrate robots with other automation systems, including conveyors, sensors, and safety devices.

 Conduct robot testing, calibration, and fine-tuning to ensure precise and efficient operation.


PLC Programming and Troubleshooting

 Program and troubleshoot PLCs used in automation and control systems (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi) for a variety of industrial processes.

 Create, test, and modify PLC logic programs to meet specific production requirements, including motor control, sensors, actuators, and communication protocols.

 Diagnose and resolve PLC-related issues, ensuring minimal downtime and maintaining system functionality.


Electrical Installation and Maintenance:

 Perform electrical installations, wiring, and system configurations in accordance with safety codes and operational standards.

 Troubleshoot electrical issues in robotic systems, PLC control systems, and other electrical equipment.

 Maintain, repair, and replace electrical components such as sensors, actuators, and relays used in automation systems.


System Testing and Commissioning:

 Assist in the commissioning of robotic systems and PLC-controlled equipment, conducting functionality tests and ensuring all components are operating correctly.

 Collaborate with engineers and senior technicians to optimize system performance and troubleshoot any commissioning issues.

 Perform system and software testing, updating programs as necessary to improve operations.


Product Demonstration and Trials:

 Support product demos and trials for in-house robotic and automation products, including providing technical explanations and troubleshooting during client-facing sessions.

 Set up and configure robotic systems or PLC-based applications for trials, ensuring alignment with client specifications and expectations.

 Address any technical queries from clients and provide feedback for continuous product improvement.


Documentation and Reporting:

 Create and maintain accurate records for programming changes, system installations, maintenance activities, and troubleshooting actions.

 Document electrical diagrams, PLC program code, system configurations, and test results for future reference and compliance.

 Prepare and submit daily/weekly progress reports to supervisors, highlighting completed tasks, ongoing issues, and project status.


Compliance and Safety:

 Adhere to safety protocols, particularly while working with electrical systems and robotic equipment (including lockout-tagout procedures).

 Ensure all systems are installed and maintained in accordance with industry standards and regulations.

 Promote a safety-first culture within the team, ensuring that safety practices are consistently followed during programming and troubleshooting tasks.


Training and Support:

 Provide guidance to Level 1 technicians and junior staff on basic programming, electrical troubleshooting, and system maintenance.

 Continuously learn about new technologies in robotics and PLC programming through workshops, training, and hands-on experience.

 Participate in internal training programs to develop skills in advanced programming, system integration, and new control technologies.


Key Skills and Competencies:

Robotics Programming and Integration:

 Basic understanding and hands-on experience with industrial robots (e.g., ABB, KUKA, Fanuc, or similar brands).

 Ability to program robots for specific tasks, including vision systems, pick-and-place operations, and other automation tasks.

 Knowledge of robot safety standards and programming safety protocols.


PLC Programming and Troubleshooting:

 Familiarity with PLC programming software (e.g., Siemens TIA Portal, Rockwell Studio 5000, Mitsubishi GX Works, Beckhoff TwinCAT) and logic design.

 Experience in configuring I/O, working with HMI interfaces, and integrating PLC systems with robotics and other equipment.

 Troubleshooting skills to identify and resolve PLC-related issues in industrial environments.


Electrical Systems Knowledge:

 Strong foundation in electrical systems, including circuit design, motor control, sensors, actuators, and wiring.

 Ability to install, troubleshoot, and repair electrical systems related to automation and robotics.

 Understanding of electrical safety standards and regulations, including the use of PPE and lockout-tagout (LOTO) procedures.


Problem-Solving and Troubleshooting:

 Strong analytical skills to diagnose and resolve programming, electrical, and system issues.

 Ability to work under pressure and troubleshoot problems to minimize downtime in robotic and PLC systems.


Documentation and Communication:

 Ability to write clear documentation for PLC programs, system configurations, and electrical schematics.

 Good communication skills to collaborate with team members and provide client-facing demos or technical support.


Compliance and Safety Awareness:

 Strong knowledge of safety standards for robotic systems and electrical installations.

 Committed to following safety protocols and ensuring safe working conditions when working with electrical equipment and robots.


Qualifications and Skills:

 Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related field.

 Experience: 0 to 2 years of hands-on experience with robot programming, PLC programming, and electrical systems in an industrial setting.

 Basic programming and integration of industrial robots (ABB, KUKA, Fanuc, etc.).

 PLC programming and troubleshooting (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi, etc.).

 Electrical installation, wiring, and maintenance of automation systems.

 Knowledge of motor control, sensors, actuators, and circuit design.

 Understanding of safety protocols and electrical safety standards.

 Strong problem-solving and analytical troubleshooting skills.
