Job Description

Job Title: Mechanical Draftsman – Process Equipment

Department: Engineering / Design

Industry: Chemical / Pharma / Process Equipment Manufacturing

Reports To: application / projects and operations team

 

Job Purpose

The Mechanical Draftsman – Process Equipment is responsible for preparing accurate and detailed mechanical drawings for reactors, pressure vessels, skids, and related process equipment, ensuring compliance with engineering specifications, manufacturing practices, and applicable codes.

 

Key Responsibilities

Design & Drafting

  • Prepare 2D and 3D drawings for process equipment such as:
  • Jacketed reactors
  • Pressure vessels
  • Heat exchangers
  • Agitators, supports, and skids
  • Piping layouts and nozzle orientation drawings
  • Develop GA drawings, fabrication drawings, part drawings, and assembly drawings.
  • Prepare detailed drawings for nozzles, flanges, jackets, limpet coils, supports, and internals.

Standards & Compliance

  • Follow ASME, DIN, ISO, and company design standards.
  • Apply correct GD&T, welding symbols, material grades (SS 316L, CS, Alloy steels) and surface finish requirements.
  • Ensure drawings support pressure equipment and GMP manufacturing requirements where applicable.

Manufacturing & Shop-Floor Support

  • Coordinate with production, fabrication, welding, and machining teams to ensure drawings are manufacturable.
  • Revise drawings based on shop-floor feedback, feasibility issues, and NCRs.
  • Support inspection and quality teams with drawing clarifications during fabrication and assembly.

Documentation & Control

  • Prepare and maintain Bill of Materials (BOM).
  • Manage drawing revisions, document numbering, and version control.
  • Assist in preparing drawings for customer approval and project documentation.

 

Qualifications & Experience

  • Graduate/Diploma / ITI in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Draftsmanship.
  • 3–6 years of experience in mechanical drawings, process equipment, pressure vessels, or heavy fabrication industry.
  • Exposure to chemical, pharma, API, or specialty chemical plant equipment is preferred.

 

Technical Skills

  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD (2D mandatory).
  • Working knowledge of 3D CAD software (SolidWorks / Inventor / NX / Creo).
  • Understanding of:
  • Pressure vessel components and terminology
  • Fabrication drawings and welding details
  • Basic piping and equipment layout concepts
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, datasheets, and equipment specifications.

 

Soft Skills & Attributes

  • High attention to detail and drawing accuracy.
  • Practical understanding of shop-floor fabrication constraints.
  • Good coordination skills with engineering, production, and QA teams.
  • Ability to work under project timelines and handle multiple jobs.

 

Working Conditions

  • Primarily office-based with regular interaction with factory/shop-floor teams.
  • Occasional site visits for drawing validation and as-built documentation.
