Job Description
Algorithm Architect MCU
Business Unit: EPS Automotive Electronics
Role: Algorithm Architect – MCU (Motor Control Unit)
The Algorithm Architect – MCU will define, design, and validate the algorithms that control electric motors in EVs or hybrid vehicles. This role focuses on torque control, motor efficiency optimization, field-oriented control (FOC), sensorless control, and system-level integration of motor control algorithms across embedded hardware platforms. You will serve as the technical authority for motor control algorithms, ensuring high-performance, safety-compliant, and scalable solutions for traction and auxiliary motor systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and own the end-to- end algorithmic architecture for motor control, including traction, auxiliary, and hybrid motors.
- Develop motor control strategies such as Field-Oriented Control (FOC), Direct Torque Control (DTC), sensorless control, and torque/speed regulation.
- Design algorithms for inverter control, PWM modulation, current/voltage sensing, and thermal management.
- Collaborate with hardware engineers to optimize algorithms for embedded platforms (MCU, DSP, FPGA, SoC).
- Ensure functional safety (ISO 26262) compliance for motor control algorithms and contribute to ASIL-level definitions.
- Lead model-based algorithm development and simulation using MATLAB/Simulink or equivalent tools.
- Define interfaces between motor control algorithms and vehicle-level systems (battery management, drivetrain, regenerative braking).
- Optimize algorithms for real-time execution, computational efficiency and fault tolerance on embedded systems.
- Participate in HIL/SIL testing, algorithm validation and performance benchmarking.
- Mentor and guide algorithm engineers on best practices, design patterns, and embedded implementation.
- Keep abreast of latest motor control technologies, sensorless techniques, and EV trends to inform architectural decisions.
Qualifications:
- Master’s or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Mechatronics, or related discipline.
- 8-12 years of experience in motor control algorithm development for automotive or industrial applications.
- Deep understanding of electric motors (BLDC, PMSM, Induction) and power electronics.
- Strong experience in real-time embedded systems, C/C++ programming, and DSP/MCU platforms.
- Knowledge of ISO 26262 Functional Safety and experience designing ASIL C/D compliant algorithms.
- Experience with model-based design (e.g. MATLAB/Simulink).
- Familiarity with vehicle communication protocols (CAN, Ethernet etc.) and integration with vehicle control units.
- Solid understanding of state estimation, sensor fusion, and control theory.
- Experience with EV traction inverters, e-axle systems, or high-power motor drives.
- Exposure to HIL/SIL testing and embedded control hardware validation.
- Knowledge of regenerative braking, torque vectoring, and efficiency optimization techniques.
- Familiarity with AI/ML applications in motor control (predictive control, anomaly detection).
- Understanding of OTA updates and embedded software lifecycle management.
- Strong analytical and system-level thinking capabilities.
- Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Leadership and mentoring ability for algorithm development teams.
Passion for electrification, automotive innovation, and high-performance control systems.
