Job Description
Data Engineer Lead /Manager
Role Summary
The Data Engineering Manager is responsible for driving reliable delivery, improving engineering efficiency, and maximizing team productivity across data platforms and pipelines. This role combines hands-on technical leadership, strong execution management, and people leadership to ensure data solutions are delivered predictably, at scale, and with high quality.
The manager will lead a team of data engineers, own delivery outcomes, establish engineering best practices, and continuously improve velocity, reliability, and cost efficiency of data systems.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Delivery & Execution Excellence
Own end‑to‑end delivery of data engineering initiatives, ensuring on‑time, on‑scope, and high‑quality execution.
Ensure ≥85–90% sprint/iteration commitment completion, with minimal spillover.
Proactively manage dependencies, risks, and capacity to avoid delivery surprises.
Drive strong RAG discipline, ensuring projects move out of RED/AMBER states within defined timelines.
Partner closely with Product, Analytics, and Platform teams to align priorities and execution plans.
2. Engineering Efficiency & Productivity:
Improve team productivity and throughput by optimizing development workflows, tooling, and processes.
Drive adoption of automation and AI‑assisted engineering practices to reduce manual effort and cycle time.
Establish and track key metrics such as:
Pipeline reliability and SLA adherence
Incident rates and MTTR
Delivery predictability and velocity trends
Cost and resource utilization
Continuously identify and eliminate bottlenecks across design, development, testing, and operations.
3. Technical Leadership & Quality:
Provide technical guidance on data architecture, pipeline design, scalability, reliability, and cost optimization.
Ensure data platforms meet defined SLAs for freshness, availability, and accuracy.
Drive best practices for:
Data quality checks and validation
Monitoring, alerting, and observability
Documentation, runbooks, and operational readiness
Review designs and critical implementations, ensuring solutions are robust, secure, and maintainable.
4. Team Leadership & People Management:
Lead, mentor, and grow a team of data engineers across experience levels.
Own goal setting, performance reviews, coaching, and development plans for team members.
Build strong next‑level leaders and reduce single points of failure.
Maintain a healthy team environment with high engagement, collaboration, and accountability.
Support hiring and onboarding to close capacity or skill gaps in a timely manner.
5. Cost & Operational Ownership:
Ensure data platforms and pipelines are cost‑efficient and right‑sized.
Identify and deliver measurable cost optimizations (compute, storage, tooling).
Balance performance, reliability, and cost trade‑offs with clear business justification.
6. AI & Automation Enablement:
Drive safe and responsible adoption of AI‑assisted data engineering (e.g., AI‑driven debugging, documentation, data quality rule generation).
Ensure at least 70%+ of the team actively uses approved AI tools to improve productivity.
Track and report measurable efficiency or quality gains attributable to AI and automation initiatives.
Required Skills & Experience
Must‑Have
8+ years of experience in data engineering, with 2–4+ years in a people management role.
Strong experience with data pipelines, ETL/ELT, batch and/or streaming systems.
Proven track record of driving delivery predictability and team productivity.
Hands‑on understanding of cloud data platforms, data warehouses, and orchestration tools.
Experience defining and tracking engineering metrics (delivery, reliability, efficiency).
Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
Good‑to‑Have
Experience with AI‑assisted development or automation in data engineering.
Exposure to cost optimization strategies for cloud data platforms.
Experience scaling teams or platforms in a multi‑project environment.
