Mainframe OPS/MVS Engineer (Automation & GDPS)

The Role
Key Responsibilities
Automation Engineering
- Design, code, and implement operations automation for z/OS using industry-standard automation tools.
- Develop, maintain, and optimize OPS/MVS automation rules, including event-driven AOF policies and OPS/REXX logic.
- Build NetView and System Automation (SA) rules, scripts, command lists, and automation tables to manage system and application resources.
- Automate IPL sequences, subsystem startup/shutdown, message handling, command routing, and resource state management.
GDPS Installation, Maintenance & Operations
- Install, configure, and maintain GDPS software, automation components, and associated scripts.
- Support and improve GDPS-controlled automation flows for replication, failover, recovery, and coordinated multi-site operations.
- Participate in Rapid Recovery / DR exercises, validating scripts, procedures, and automation readiness.
- Ensure synchronization between primary and secondary GDPS automation environments.
Scripting & Custom Tooling
- Develop automation modules using REXX, OPS/REXX, NetView REXX, and CLIST as needed.
- Create reusable script libraries to handle message processing, resource health checks, command responses, and API-driven automation.
- Integrate automation with enterprise monitoring systems and log/event pipelines.
Incident Response & Operational Support
- Troubleshoot automation rule failures, event handling gaps, and GDPS script errors.
- Investigate operational issues, recommend enhancements, and implement fixes.
- Provide SME support during recovery events, IPLs, subsystem outages, and infrastructure changes.
Documentation & Process Improvement
- Develop and maintain detailed runbooks, automation design documents, GDPS procedures, and DR playbooks.
- Standardize automation processes and ensure compliance with enterprise operational frameworks.
- Work with cross-functional teams including Storage, Network, Sysplex, DB2, CICS, and Operations to refine automation logic.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- 12+ years of experience in mainframe systems engineering with a focus on automation.
- Strong hands-on experience with:
- OPS/MVS rule design, AOF automation, and OPS/REXX scripting
- NetView automation tables, command lists, and message processing
- System Automation (SA) resources, policies, and automation flows
- Proven experience installing, customizing, and maintaining GDPS software and automation scripts.
- Proficiency in REXX, including complex automation routines.
- Solid experience in Rapid Recovery / Disaster Recovery scenarios, failover testing, and recovery automation.
- Strong understanding of z/OS system commands, console operations, JES2/3, WLM, and subsystem lifecycle management.
Preferred Skills
- Knowledge of Parallel Sysplex interactions and automation requirements.
- Experience with PPRC/Global Mirror environments as they relate to GDPS.
- Familiarity with message automation frameworks (e.g., SA z/OS, NetView pipelines).
- Exposure to cross-platform orchestration or enterprise automation tools.
- Experience integrating OPS/MVS automation with monitoring tools or APIs.
