Job Description
The Liferaft Technician is responsible for the production, assembly, inspection, testing, and maintenance of life rafts and associated safety equipment. This role is critical in ensuring that all life-saving equipment meets stringent international maritime safety standards and regulatory compliance requirements. The technician works in a fast-paced manufacturing environment where precision, attention to detail, and adherence to safety protocols are paramount.
Production & Assembly
· Assemble life raft components including inflatable chambers, buoyancy tubes, canopies, floor systems, and survival kits according to technical specifications and engineering drawings
· Operate and maintain specialized manufacturing equipment and tools required for life raft assembly
· Prepare and stage materials and components for production runs
· Follow bill of materials (BOM) and work instructions to ensure accurate assembly sequence
· Inspect all components before assembly for defects or damage
· Perform quality checks at each assembly stage to identify and report deviations
· Document assembly progress and completion of each unit
Quality Control & Testing
· Conduct pressure testing on inflatable chambers and buoyancy systems using calibrated testing equipment
· Perform visual and functional inspections of completed life rafts against quality standards
· Test safety features including emergency inflation systems, water stabilizers, and sea anchors
· Verify proper functioning of canopy deployment mechanisms and zippers
· Maintain detailed testing records and quality documentation
· Identify non-conforming components and escalate to supervisory staff
· Participate in quality audits and continuous improvement initiatives
· Report defects and recommend corrective actions
Maintenance & Repair
· Perform minor repairs and adjustments on damaged or non-conforming life rafts
· Replace defective components with approved alternatives
· Service and maintain manufacturing equipment to ensure optimal performance
· Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and coordinate with maintenance teams
· Keep work areas clean, organized, and free from hazards
· Properly dispose of waste materials and scrap in compliance with regulations
Compliance & Documentation
· Adhere to all maritime safety standards including SOLAS, LSA Code, and relevant IMO regulations
· Maintain comprehensive records of assembly, testing, and inspection activities
· Document any deviations, non-conformities, or safety issues
· Ensure all life rafts are properly labeled with manufacturing dates, serial numbers, and certification marks
· Support regulatory audits and third-party inspections
· Keep current with changes in safety standards and manufacturing procedures
Safety & Housekeeping
· Follow all company safety policies and procedures without exception
· Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required for the assigned tasks
· Report all safety hazards, near-misses, and accidents immediately to supervisory staff
· Maintain a clean and organized work environment
· Comply with OSHA and local workplace safety regulations
· Participate in safety training and briefings as scheduled
· Promote a culture of safety awareness and responsible conduct
