Job Description
Job Title: Chef for Food Startup
Job Description:
We are looking for an enthusiastic and versatile chef to join our experimental food startup. First the RnD stage will go on then on successful completion will proceed towards restaurant. This role is ideal for someone eager to blend creativity with culinary science, focusing on vegetarian dishes inspired by a Mexican, continental and other pan asian cuisines. The chef will be responsible for crafting a documented menu, experimenting with ingredients, and overseeing various operational tasks. This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain diverse experience across multiple facets of the food business. Good English is needed.
Responsibilities:
- Menu Creation: Develop and document a diverse, vegetarian menu inspired by Mexican and other continental cuisines. Continuously innovate and refine dishes based on feedback and seasonal availability.
- Ingredient Sourcing: Be actively involved in sourcing raw materials and ingredients from local markets. Research and select the best quality ingredients within budgetary constraints, and establish relationships with suppliers.
- Food Science and Experimentation: Apply the science of food to understand ingredient properties, optimize flavor combinations, and ensure nutritional balance in all dishes from scratch. No frozen assembly line work.
- Operations and Inventory Management: Assist in managing kitchen inventory, ensure ingredients are stocked, and keep track of resource consumption. This may include checking stock, placing orders, and at times, participating in basic accounting tasks related to food costs and finances.
- Quality and Safety Control: Maintain high standards of cleanliness, food safety, and hygiene in the kitchen. Monitor quality control across all food preparation and presentation stages.
- Customer Feedback Integration: Review and adjust the menu based on reviews, identifying potential improvements or new dishes to try.
Challenges and Expectations:
- High Workload and Diverse Tasks: In addition to developing the menu, you will be responsible for various other tasks like sourcing ingredients, managing inventory, and sometimes assisting with basic financial management, such as tracking expenses and overseeing food costs. The workload will be high, and flexibility is required.
- Resource Constraints: Working in a startup means resources may be limited. You may need to find creative ways to manage kitchen equipment, ingredient shortages, and tight budgets.
- Operational Involvement: You will not only cook but also help with back-end operations such as tracking resources, understanding financial aspects (e.g., managing food costs), and supporting the business side of the kitchen.
- Pressure to Innovate and Deliver Consistency: Balancing the need to create unique and delicious dishes with ensuring consistency in quality and taste can be demanding.
- Customer and Operational Feedback: As this is a startup, you will need to stay adaptable. Regular feedback—both from customers and team members—will require you to make quick adjustments to improve both the food and the operational process.
- Learning and Growth: You will gain valuable experience not just as a chef but also in managing kitchen resources, understanding the economics of running a food business, and working in a collaborative startup culture.
