Job Description

A 3D Character Artist/3D Printer Operator is a hybrid, technical-artistic role responsible for creating digital character models, optimizing them for additive manufacturing, operating 3D printing hardware, and performing post-processing to create final, physical, or digital assets. This role bridges the gap between digital design (sculpting/modeling) and physical production, ensuring artistic creations are technically feasible for 3D printing technology.

Job Description & Responsibilities

  • 3D Modeling and Character Design: Create, sculpt, and texture 3D characters, creatures, and props using software like ZBrush, Blender, or Maya.
  • Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM): Modify and optimize digital models for 3D printing by repairing non-manifold geometry, ensuring watertight meshes, and reducing polygon counts where necessary.
  • Slicing and Print Preparation: Use slicing software (e.g., Cura, Chitubox, PreForm) to prepare 3D models for printing, including setting orientation, creating support structures, and determining infill/layer height for FDM or resin printers.
  • Printer Operation and Maintenance: Set up, calibrate, and operate a variety of 3D printers (FDM, SLA/Resin-based). Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting to ensure maximum uptime.
  • Post-Processing: Perform post-printing tasks such as removing support structures, curing, washing, sanding, painting, and assembling parts to achieve a finished product.
  • Material Management: Select appropriate materials (e.g., PLA, ABS, PETG, Resin) based on project requirements and manage material inventory.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Proficiency in 3D Software: Strong skills in ZBrush (sculpting), Blender, Maya, or Fusion 360.
  • 3D Printing Expertise: Hands-on experience with FDM/SLA/Resin technologies and printing materials.
  • Anatomical Understanding: A strong grasp of anatomy, proportions, and character structure.
  • Technical Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot print failures, machine errors, and file issues.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous approach to quality control, ensuring high-quality, polished products.
  • Time Management: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, from design to final print.

Commonly Used Tools

  • Software: ZBrush, Blender, Maya, Substance Painter, Chitubox, Cura, PreForm, Fusion 360.
  • Hardware: FDM printers (e.g., Prusa, Ultimaker), SLA/DLP printers (e.g., Formlabs).

Work Environment & Expectations

This is often a full-time, on-site role, frequently required in sectors like rapid prototyping, gaming, miniatures, or industrial design. Candidates must be able to work with both digital and physical tools.
