Maintenance Assistant

The role generally splits into preventive maintenance (stopping problems before they happen) and emergency restoration (fixing things when the internet goes dark).

• Testing & Diagnostics: Using specialized tools like an OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) to find breaks, bends, or signal loss in the cable.
• Splicing & Repair: Performing fusion splicing to join fiber filaments together with microscopic accuracy. This often happens in cramped spaces or mobile "splice labs."
• Fiber Characterization: Measuring light loss and signal quality to ensure the network meets performance standards.
• Infrastructure Inspection: Physically checking "outside plant" (OSP) hardware, such as pedestals, handholes, and aerial lines, for weather damage or interference.
