Assistant Fitter / Grinder

A Grinder's job description in manufacturing involves operating grinding machines to shape, smooth,  and finish materials to precise specifications, while also adhering to strict safety protocols. Key  responsibilities include setting up machinery, inspecting finished products for quality using  measuring tools, performing routine maintenance, and collaborating with production teams. 

Core duties 

∙ Machine operation: Load, operate, and adjust grinding machines, which can include planar,  cylindrical, or centerless grinders, to shape and smooth parts according to blueprints and  specifications. 

∙ Quality control: Inspect finished workpieces for accuracy and quality, often using precision  measuring tools like calipers and micrometers. 

∙ Setup and calibration: Select the correct grinding wheel, adjust machine controls and speeds, and  calibrate equipment for optimal performance. 

∙ Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and oiling of machinery to ensure it is in good  working order and to maintain a safe and organized workspace. 

∙ Safety and compliance: Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and procedures, including Lock Out/Tag-Out procedures, and ensure compliance with industry standards. 

∙ Team collaboration: Work with other team members to meet production goals, deadlines, and to  troubleshoot any issues. 

Required skills and qualifications 

∙ Ability to read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and engineering specifications. ∙ Familiarity with various types of grinding machines and their operation. 

∙ Proficiency with measuring tools like gauges, calipers, and micrometers. 

∙ Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills. 

∙ Knowledge of relevant safety procedures. 

∙ Physical fitness, including the ability to lift and carry parts up to 50 pounds occasionally. ∙ Manual dexterity and physical stamina to stand or walk for extended periods. ∙ Basic math skills for precise measurements and calculations.
