Job Description

A captain's job responsibilities vary by industry but fundamentally involve leadership, safety, and operational oversight. In maritime settings, this includes navigating and operating a vessel, ensuring the safety of passengers and crew, maintaining logs, and managing daily operations. In a restaurant, a captain leads the front-of-house staff to ensure excellent guest service by overseeing table service, managing staff, handling guest concerns, and coordinating with the kitchen. 

Maritime captain

  • Navigation and operation: Operate and navigate a vessel safely in accordance with all regulations.
  • Safety and security: Ensure the safety and security of passengers, crew, and the vessel itself.
  • Crew management: Train, supervise, and lead the deck crew and other crew members.
  • Logistics: Maintain and report on the vessel's activities, logs, and records.
  • Maintenance: Oversee the maintenance and repair of the vessel as needed.
  • Compliance: Adhere to all maritime, environmental, and safety regulations. 

Restaurant captain

  • Guest service: Greet guests, take orders, explain menu items, and ensure satisfaction throughout their meal.
  • Staff management: Supervise and coordinate servers and other front-of-house staff to ensure smooth workflow and efficient service.
  • Kitchen coordination: Communicate with the kitchen about orders, wait times, and special requirements to ensure timely and accurate preparation.
  • Problem-solving: Address guest complaints, resolve issues, and handle requests promptly.
  • Operational management: Oversee the cleanliness and organization of the dining area, manage bill settlements, and assist with closing procedures.
  • Training: Train new staff members on service standards and procedures.
