Job Description

An Environmental Officer monitors, manages, and improves environmental performance within an organization or area, ensuring compliance with environmental laws, regulations, and standards. Key tasks include conducting site inspections, analyzing pollution levels (air, water, soil), implementing sustainability strategies, and managing waste. They often produce compliance reports, train staff, and manage environmental risks to promote sustainable practices. 

Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Compliance & Inspection: Visiting sites (factories, farms, projects) to ensure adherence to environmental legislation and regulations.
  • Monitoring & Assessment: Taking environmental samples (soil, water, air) to test for pollution and assessing environmental impact.
  • Environmental Management System (EMS): Developing, implementing, and monitoring environmental strategies, policies, and action plans.
  • Reporting: Preparing, reviewing, and submitting technical reports on compliance, incidents, and environmental performance.
  • Risk Mitigation & Sustainability: Identifying ways to manage environmental liabilities, reduce pollution, and improve waste management/sustainability.
  • Training & Awareness: Conducting educational campaigns to raise environmental awareness among staff.
  • Stakeholder Management: Liaising with government bodies, contractors, and local authorities. 

Typical Qualifications & Skills

  • Education: A degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
  • Technical Knowledge: Thorough understanding of environmental legislation, monitoring techniques, and risk assessment procedures.
  • Skills: Strong analytical, communication, report-writing, and, sometimes, project management skills.
  • Experience: Previous experience in environmental monitoring, auditing, or, in some cases, with hazardous materials. 

Working Conditions

  • The role often involves a mix of office work (reporting) and field visits (inspections), which may require traveling to various, sometimes remote, locations.
