Job Summary:

The Horticulture Manager is responsible for the strategic planning and daily execution of all plant production and maintenance activities. This role involves managing a team of growers and technicians, ensuring plant health and quality, and optimizing production schedules to meet market or seasonal demands. The ideal candidate combines technical expertise in plant science with strong leadership and business acumen.

Key Responsibilities

• Production & Maintenance: Plan and oversee planting, transplanting, irrigation, and fertilization schedules. Manage environmental controls (temperature, humidity, light) in greenhouses or nurseries.
• Plant Health: Identify and diagnose pests, diseases, and nutrient deficiencies. Implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies and ensure the safe application of fertilizers and pesticides.
• Team Leadership: Recruit, train, and supervise horticultural staff. Set work schedules and ensure all team members follow safety protocols and best practices.
• Budgeting & Inventory: Manage operational budgets, analyze costs, and negotiate with suppliers for seeds, soil, equipment, and chemicals. Maintain accurate records of stock levels and plant yields.
• Strategic Planning: Develop long-term planting programs and business plans. Stay updated on market trends to decide which plant varieties to grow for maximum profitability or aesthetic impact.
• Compliance: Ensure all operations meet local agricultural regulations, environmental standards, and workplace health and safety (OHS) requirements.
• Required Skills & QualificationsEducation: Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Botany, Agricultural Science, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred for large-scale operations).

Experience:

• 5+ years of experience in a supervisory role within a nursery, greenhouse, or commercial farm.
• Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of plant physiology, soil science, irrigation systems, and pest management.
• Soft Skills: Strong leadership, verbal and written communication, and the ability to solve complex problems under pressure.
