Life Unlimited. At Smith+Nephew, we design and manufacture technology that takes the limits off living.
Join our dynamic ENT R&D team where cutting-edge technology meets rigorous validation. As an Electrical Engineer you will be contributing to electrical engineering activities for New Product Development (NPD) of advanced medical devices, with an emphasis on electrical systems for Electrosurgical and ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) devices. This role requires technical proficiency in electrical design, embedded systems, and compliance with medical device standards (e.g., IEC 62304, IEC 60601-1, IEC 60601-2-2, IEC 60601-1-2, ISO 13485, ISO 14971). You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to support product development in regulated environments for electrosurgical and handheld electronic systems.
What will you be doing?
- Electrical Design Support: Assist in the design, prototyping, and testing of embedded systems, including analog, digital, mixed-signal, and high-frequency electronic circuits for electrosurgical and handheld devices.
- Requirements and Integration Assistance: Contribute to the development of electrical requirements and specifications. Support system integration activities, including electrical circuit design, power management, signal processing, RF design, stepper motor control, and hardware-software interfaces.
- Testing and Verification: Participate in verification and validation activities to ensure functional, electrical, and safety requirements are met. Define and execute test methods using lab equipment and debugging tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and multimeters. Assist in regression analysis and risk mitigation for electrical components.
- Certification Support: Support coordination of electrical safety (IEC 60601-1), safety of HF Surgical Equipment (IEC 60601-2-2), and EMC (IEC 60601-1-2) certification testing. Help ensure compliance with medical device regulations (ISO, GMP, FDA, CE, MDR) and design controls.
- Risk and Evaluation Assistance: Assist in analyzing product and project risks, with focus on electrical safety. Support pre-clinical and clinical evaluations to verify electrical reliability and performance.
- Troubleshooting and Support: Provide support for production issues, field failures, and component supply strategies, including evaluating alternate parts due to obsolescence. Collaborate with contract manufacturers and suppliers to meet electrical specifications and implement basic improvements.
- Innovation Contribution: Participate in investigating new technologies in electrical systems, such as low-power and battery-operated devices, to support the innovation pipeline for medical devices.
- Reporting and Documentation: Use electrical design and simulation tools (e.g., for circuit simulation, LabVIEW) to generate reports on electrical performance and contribute to documentation for stakeholders.
What will you need to be successful?
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field. Preferred: Master’s degree in electrical engineering or a relevant discipline.
- Work Mode – 5 days working from office, Kharadi, Pune in UK Shift (12:30 PM to 9:30 PM IST)
- Experience: Minimum 2+ years with a BS degree or 1 year with an MS degree in Electrical Engineering with strong hands-on experience, preferably in medical device development or other regulated industries.
- Experience with embedded systems (RTOS or bare-metal) and basic project involvement in R&D for electrical components is a plus.
- Proficiency in electronics design (embedded systems, mixed-signal, analog, digital, RF, high-frequency layout), simulation, and testing.
- Knowledge of C/C++ for embedded firmware; familiarity with electrical design tools, LabVIEW, and debugging equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters).
- Understanding of medical device standards (e.g., IEC 62304, IEC 60601-1, IEC 60601-2-2, IEC 60601-1-2, ISO 13485, ISO 14971, FDA/MDR guidance).
- Experience with electrical systems in electrosurgical or other medical devices, PCBA manufacturing, and basic embedded environments. Awareness of mechanical and software engineering principles.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills for electrical challenges. Good communication skills to work in cross-functional teams. Motivated and able to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
