The Role 

The purpose of the role is to support the Springer Nature Portfolio Editorial Hub in Pune and Delhi by fostering a sense of community to make it an attractive place to work. To ensure the effective integration of primarily the Pune editors and other Nature Portfolio editors based in India with their teams globally and be their chief liaison with HR. To represent Nature Portfolio as the Editorial Lead in Pune (30% of role, directed by ED/VP and a Communications series journal as a Senior Editor; 70% of role) where you will handle submissions in a topically relevant Communications series journal.   

Responsibilities, job title and reporting lines may evolve as the Editorial Hub in Pune matures. 

Responsibilities 

1. Support the editorial community and represent Springer Nature and Nature Portfolio as the Editorial Lead in Pune 

• Maintain a network of internal contacts in the Pune office; support the recruitment, onboarding and training of new staff members in Pune; work closely with local and global HR in promoting Springer Nature as an employer in Pune and Delhi and to attract the best talent to apply for open positions; continue to raise awareness and understanding of the aspects of Indian labour law relevant for local staff and their managers elsewhere. 

• Raise awareness and leads for collaborations across SN departments and offices.  

• Represent Nature Portfolio as the Editorial lead in Pune. Maintain the relationship with the wider SN editorial and publishing teams (eg Sci Rep, BMC), and editorial board members affiliated with Nature Portfolio (Communications, Nature Progress, NPJs). 

• Establish and enhance the reputation of Communications series, NPJs, Nature Communications and the broader Nature Portfolio in the scientific community by fostering good relationships with individual researchers in India, and elsewhere. 

2.  Selection of manuscripts and commissioning content for publication  

The Regional Executive Editor is a unique position that straddles two areas: in this case, the role reports directly into the Editorial Director of the Communications Series and is part of the appropriate Communications journal team and so takes on the responsibility of Senior Editor of one of the Communications journals (Communications X) 

• Select manuscripts for publication in Communications X (manuscript handling expectations to be set by the Chief Editor) 

• Attend relevant team meetings with Communications and remain abreast of standards for publication at that journal. 

• Manage peer review, aim for quality and speed of decisions and the right mix of tact and firmness in letters to authors. 

• Ensure that manuscripts accepted for publication are transferred to Production in an appropriate, complete state. 

• Recruit, train, support and keep engaged a team of external editorial board members, ensuring that they understand and implement the philosophy, editorial bar and policies of the journal. Oversee manuscripts handled by editorial board members. 

• Commission and handle relevant review-type content and commentaries for the Communications series journal. Suggest appropriate topics for Editorials and be prepared to write the piece if asked. Devise and supply editorial content for special projects, such as Collections, as agreed with the Chief Editor. 

• Recommend appropriate selected manuscripts for inclusion in the journal press releases and participate in other content promotion initiatives. 

• Attend conferences and meetings and visit research institutions (in agreement with the Chief Editor). Participate in the delivery of Masterclasses to support business requirements as agreed with the Chief Editor. 

• Deputise for the Chief Editor if the necessity arises. Support the Chief Editor in determining the strategic direction of the journal. Assist the Chief Editor in the recruitment and training of editorial staff. Assist in covering the editorial responsibilities of colleagues in their absence. 

• Other tasks as the company may assign from time to time.

• Work with other members of the editorial and administrative staff.  

• Work with the Chief Editor, Communications series who will set overall strategy, standards and best practice for the journal  

• Interact with the Production team to ensure the smooth processing of manuscripts and other material, according to production deadlines.  

Experience, skills and qualifications 

QUALIFICATIONS  

• A PhD in a relevant scientific discipline. 

• Significant experience in a senior editorial position. 

ESSENTIAL 

• Excellent communication, interpersonal and organisation skills. 

• Excellent leadership and team-building qualities. 

• Experience of external outreach activities within the STEM industry. 

• Strong understanding of the scientific process and STM publishing. 

• Thorough understanding of the needs of authors, referees and the Indian research community at large as key customers. 

• High analytical capability and attention to detail. 

• Passion for excellence in science and editorial integrity, credibility and respect within editorial teams. 

DESIRABLE 

• An understanding of the Indian research landscape. 

• Product development experience.
