Job Description

Job Title: Lead Safety Officer

Location: Tamil Nadu

Industry: Steel / Iron & Steel Manufacturing

Experience: Minimum 5 Years (Preferably in Steel Plant / Heavy Industry)


Job Summary : The Lead Safety Officer will be responsible for implementing, monitoring, and continuously improving safety systems across the steel manufacturing facility. The role requires strong knowledge of industrial safety standards, statutory compliance, and risk management in high-risk environments such as steel plants.

  • Key Responsibilities


  • Lead and supervise the plant safety team to ensure adherence to safety protocols.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor safety policies in compliance with the Factories Act, 1948, Tamil Nadu Factories Rules, 1950, and other applicable statutory regulations.
  • Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments across plant operations (Blast Furnace, SMS, Rolling Mill, etc.).
  • Ensure compliance with standards such as Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO 45001) guidelines where applicable.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and near-miss cases; prepare detailed reports and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
  • Conduct safety training, toolbox talks, mock drills, and emergency preparedness programs.
  • Monitor work permit systems (Hot Work, Confined Space, Work at Height, Electrical Isolation, etc.).
  • Ensure proper usage of PPE and enforce safety discipline across departments.
  • Liaise with government authorities, inspectors, and regulatory bodies during audits and inspections.
  • Maintain safety documentation, records, and statutory registers.
  • Promote a strong safety culture and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • QualificationsBachelor’s Degree / Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical / Metallurgical / Industrial / Safety).
  • Diploma / Advanced Diploma in Industrial Safety (Mandatory).
  • Certification in NEBOSH / IOSH (Preferred).
  • Knowledge of Fire & Safety Management systems.
  • ExperienceMinimum 5 years of experience in Industrial Safety.
  • At least 3 years in Steel Plant / Heavy Engineering / Manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on experience in high-temperature operations, material handling systems, cranes, gas pipelines, and heavy equipment safety.
  • Required SkillsStrong knowledge of statutory safety compliance in Tamil Nadu.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills.
  • Good communication and reporting skills.
  • Ability to handle emergency situations effectively.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and safety reporting tools.
