Job Description

Associate Software Engineer

At Bristol Myers Squibb, our employees often ask, “Who are you working for?”—a question that fuels collaboration, accountability, and urgency in our work. Our purpose-driven culture inspires us to discover, develop, and deliver innovative medicines to prevail over serious diseases. We offer uniquely interesting and meaningful work, opportunities for growth, and a supportive environment that values inclusion, wellbeing, flexibility, and comprehensive benefits. This is work that transforms the lives of patients, and the careers of those who do it.

Position Summary

This is a hands-on role helping to design, build, and operationalize AI/ML and Decision Intelligence solutions that move the organization from insights to action. Working under the guidance of senior engineers, you will work closely with business and technical teams to translate real problems into scalable Aera-based decision flows and AI/ML components, contributing to production-grade capabilities while following enterprise standards and reusable patterns. The role provides end-to-end exposure to the decision lifecycle — problem framing, data readiness, decision logic, and user adoption — while accelerating both business impact and individual capability development in enterprise Decision Intelligence and AI engineering.

Position Responsibilities

Decision Intelligence (Aera):

  • Write and optimize SQL scripts for data transformation and processing within Aera; knowledge of Python and JavaScript is a plus.
  • Validate and reconcile data outputs to ensure accuracy and consistency across Aera models.
  • Support the development and configuration of Aera Skills / business use cases (Decision Intelligence applications).
  • Develop and maintain data crawlers to extract and ingest data from enterprise source systems into Aera.
  • Contribute to the development of analytics models, dashboards, and reports aligned with use case objectives.
  • Create and manage ETL workflows within the Aera platform to ensure accurate and timely data processing.
  • Design and deploy automated workflows using Aera's built-in process builder capabilities.
  • Participate in testing, troubleshooting, and iterative improvement of Aera application components, including automated smoke testing for applications.

AI/ML & Gen AI:

  • Develop and implement AI/ML models and components under the guidance of senior engineers to help solve business problems.
  • Support the implementation of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines and work with vector embeddings for applications such as semantic search.
  • Contribute to the development of agentic AI workflows using frameworks such as LangGraph, Agent SDK under senior guidance.
  • Perform data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model evaluation on structured and unstructured datasets.
  • Write clean, well-tested code, participate in code reviews, and maintain documentation for models, components, and processes.
  • Continuously learn and stay current with advancements in AI/ML, Gen AI, and Decision Intelligence technologies.

Desired Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, AI, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Approximately 0–2 years of experience in software or data engineering, with exposure to AI/ML, Gen AI, or Decision Intelligence platforms.
  • Strong SQL skills for data transformation and processing; proficiency in Python (JavaScript is a plus).
  • Understanding of ETL concepts, data modeling, and data validation/reconciliation practices.
  • Foundational understanding of AI/ML algorithms, data structures, and software design principles.
  • Hands-on exposure to LLM APIs, prompt engineering, or Gen AI frameworks through projects, internships, or professional work.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and containerization concepts (Docker).
  • Experience with version control (Git) and agile development methodologies.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and eagerness to learn in a collaborative team environment.

Ideal Candidates Would Also Have:

  • Exposure to Aera or other Decision Intelligence platforms, including data crawlers, decision flows, or process automation.
  • Academic or project experience with RAG, vector databases, or agentic AI frameworks.
  • Exposure to the life sciences or pharmaceutical domain.
  • Good communication skills and experience working with globally dispersed teams.

We hire for skills and capabilities, not just credentials – if this role excites you, but doesn’t perfectly match your resume, we encourage you to apply anyway.
