Plant Operator

Key responsibilities

• Run the distillation columns on the first floor of the plant through the shift: start-up, steady running and shutdown as per SOP
• Maintain column temperature profile: reboiler, column top, middle and bottom temperatures within set limits
• Monitor and control reflux: reflux ratio, reflux flow and reflux drum level
• Run condensers and vent condensers: check cooling water and chilled water flow and temperature, and watch for vapour loss
• Control vacuum, pressure and steam to the reboiler
• Read and act on field instruments and panel readings: temperature indicators, pressure and vacuum gauges, level gauges, flow meters, PLC/DCS screens
• Switch receivers and make cut changes as instructed by the supervisor and QC
• Record all readings in the log sheet every hour
• Spot abnormal conditions early (flooding, bumping, pressure rise, cooling failure, leaks) and take first action as per SOP, then report at once
• Follow PPE, earthing, no-smoking and permit rules at all times
• Hand over the column with a written note on status, readings and issues

Skills

• Hands-on vacuum distillation column operation (batch and/or continuous)
• Good understanding of reflux, condenser and reboiler operation
• Able to read field instruments and basic PLC/DCS screens
• Alert, careful and quick to act on abnormal readings
• Willing to work rotating shifts, including nights
