JOB DESCRIPTION – MIG

WELDERDesignation: MIG Welder

Department: Production – Welding

Reporting To: Production Supervisor / Welding In-charge

Location: Manufacturing Plant

Job Type: Full Time

1. Job PurposeTo carry out MIG/MAG welding operations as per approved drawings, Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), work instructions and quality requirements, ensuring proper weld quality, dimensional accuracy, productivity and safety.

2. Key ResponsibilitiesA. Welding Operations·        Perform MIG/MAG welding of mild steel, stainless steel and other approved materials as per job requirements.

·        Read and understand engineering drawings, weld symbols, dimensions and welding instructions.

·        Set and adjust welding parameters such as:

o  Welding current

o  Voltage

o  Wire feed speed

o  Welding speed

o  Gas flow

o  Inductance, where applicable

·        Select the correct welding wire, size, shielding gas and polarity as specified.

·        Perform fillet, butt, lap and other required weld joints.

·        Weld components using fixtures, jigs and approved work-holding arrangements.

·        Maintain correct torch angle, travel speed, arc length and electrode stick-out.

·        Ensure proper fit-up, alignment and positioning before welding.

·        Carry out tack welding and final welding as per approved sequence.

B. Quality Control·        Inspect welds visually for defects such as:

o  Porosity

o  Undercut

o  Lack of fusion

o  Lack of penetration

o  Cracks

o  Spatter

o  Burn-through

o  Over-welding/under-welding

o  Incomplete weld

o  Distortion

·        Check weld size and appearance against drawing/WPS requirements.

·        Ensure correct weld length and location.

·        Perform dimensional checks after welding where specified.

·        Stop production and inform the supervisor/quality inspector when abnormal welding conditions or defects are identified.

·        Segregate defective components and prevent mixing of OK and rejected parts.

·        Carry out rework only as per approved instructions.

C. Process Execution·        Follow the approved SOP, WPS, control plan and work instructions.

·        Verify availability and condition of the correct material, fixture, welding wire and consumables before starting production.

·        Ensure welding machine parameters are within the approved range.

·        Perform first-piece/self-inspection as instructed.

·        Maintain identification and traceability of components.

·        Complete production and inspection records accurately.

·        Maintain required production quantity and cycle time.

·        Follow FIFO and proper material handling practices.

D. Equipment & Workplace·        Conduct basic pre-use checks of the MIG welding machine, torch, cables, earth connection, regulator and gas supply.

·        Keep welding equipment and workplace clean and in good working condition.

·        Clean contact tips, nozzles and torch components as required.

·        Report machine, fixture, jig, gas leakage or equipment abnormalities immediately.

·        Prevent damage to fixtures, gauges and welding equipment.

Safety·        Follow all applicable safety procedures and PPE requirements.

·        Use welding helmet, gloves, safety shoes, apron/jacket and other required PPE.

·        Follow hot-work and fire-safety requirements.

·        Ensure proper ventilation/fume extraction during welding.

·        Handle gas cylinders safely.

·        Follow LOTO requirements when maintenance or intervention requires isolation.

·        Maintain good housekeeping and 5S at the workstation.

·        Immediately report unsafe conditions, near misses and incidents.

3. Required Technical SkillsThe MIG Welder should demonstrate competency in:

1.     MIG/MAG welding machine operation.

2.     Welding parameter setting and adjustment.

3.     Selection of appropriate welding wire and shielding gas.

4.     Understanding of welding symbols and basic engineering drawings.

5.     Correct welding torch manipulation.

6.     Joint preparation and fit-up.

7.     Fixture and jig usage.

8.     Visual inspection of welds.

9.     Identification of common welding defects.

10. Basic dimensional inspection.

11. Welding sequence and distortion control.

12. Basic machine troubleshooting.

13. Safe handling of welding equipment and gas cylinders.

14. 5S and workplace housekeeping.

4. Qualification &

ExperienceMinimum Qualification: ITI – Welder / equivalent technical qualification preferred.

Experience:

·        Fresher may be considered after successful practical skill evaluation.

·        Preferably 1–3 years of experience in MIG/MAG welding in sheet-metal/fabrication manufacturing.

5. Competency RequirementsThe employee shall be evaluated periodically through practical skill assessment.

L1 – Basic MIG Welder·        Can perform basic MIG welding under supervision.

·        Can follow work instructions.

·        Can identify obvious weld defects.

·        Requires support for parameter setting and process troubleshooting.

L2 – Skilled MIG Welder·        Independently performs MIG welding as per drawing/WPS.

·        Correctly sets approved welding parameters.

·        Can perform different joint configurations.

·        Maintains weld quality and productivity consistently.

·        Identifies common defects and takes appropriate first-level corrective action.

·        Can use fixtures and basic measuring instruments.

L3 – Advanced / Master MIG

Welder·        Handles complex welding jobs independently.

·        Can control distortion and welding sequence.

·        Can troubleshoot welding defects and process abnormalities.

·        Can support parameter trials and process improvement under authorized supervision.

·        Can train and guide junior welders.

·        Demonstrates consistently high quality and productivity.

6. Performance IndicatorsThe performance of the MIG Welder may be monitored through:

·        First Pass Yield / Right First Time

·        Welding rejection rate

·        Rework rate

·        Customer/internal complaints attributable to welding

·        Productivity against standard cycle time

·        Adherence to approved welding parameters

·        Attendance and discipline

·        Safety compliance

·        5S compliance

·        Skill evaluation score

·        Training completion and competency status

7. Authority / ResponsibilityThe MIG Welder shall not independently change approved welding parameters, welding wire, shielding gas, welding sequence or process conditions where such changes can affect product quality. Any required change shall be referred to the Production/Quality/Engineering function as applicable.

8. Training RequirementsThe employee shall receive training, as applicable, on:

·        MIG/MAG welding process

·        Welding parameters

·        Welding defects and defect prevention

·        Drawing and weld-symbol reading

·        WPS and work instructions

·        Quality inspection requirements

·        Fixture and jig handling

·        Measuring instruments

·        Material identification

·        Safety and PPE

·        Fire safety

·        LOTO awareness

·        5S and housekeeping

·        Customer-specific requirements
