Position Summary: The Manager, Authorization Product Management will contribute to the development of authorization management capabilities that help healthcare providers reduce manual work and improve authorization submission accuracy. This role is based in Chennai, India and is a hybrid position.
The Manager will work closely with Product, Engineering, Design, Analytics, and Operations teams to help define and deliver prior authorization features that support customer needs. The role will contribute to product strategy, roadmap development, AI-enabled automation, product requirements, and execution across engineering teams.
About the Team: The Authorization Management Product at athenahealth helps healthcare providers obtain required insurance approvals before delivering care.
The product supports workflows that:
- Identify when prior authorizations are required.
- Submit authorization requests to insurers.
- Track request status across the authorization lifecycle.
- Reduce manual administrative effort.
- Help shorten delays in the care process.
- Improve authorization submission accuracy.
- Lower the risk of denials related to missing or incomplete authorization information.
The team brings together clinical, operational, and technical perspectives to improve accuracy, transparency, and scalability for healthcare organizations.
The product area plays an important role in helping practices manage complex payer requirements with greater consistency and less administrative burden.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Support the development and execution of product strategy for authorization management features in alignment with organizational goals and customer needs.
- Deliver automation-first strategies that leverage AI capabilities to reduce the effort required to process prior authorizations.
- Help define, prioritize, and maintain the product roadmap using market analysis, customer feedback, operational input, and business objectives.
- Analyze accuracy metrics, throughput data, and automation performance to identify opportunities for product and workflow improvements.
- Create detailed Product Requirement Documents (PRDs), product requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria to guide software development teams.
- Drive execution across multiple engineering pods using spec-driven development, ensuring each pod is self-sufficient and focused on the highest priorities.
- Partner with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and Operations teams to ensure product solutions align with industry standards and healthcare compliance requirements.
- Support cross-functional teams throughout the product development lifecycle, from concept through launch.
- Evaluate AI-enabled tools and workflows that improve product discovery, requirement quality, product analysis, documentation, or operational efficiency.
- Communicate product priorities, tradeoffs, decisions, and delivery status clearly to stakeholders across functions.
Additional Job Responsibilities
- Support release planning, readiness activities, and launch coordination for new product capabilities.
- Define product success measures and monitor customer feedback after launch to identify follow-up improvements and feature iterations.
- Lead discussions related to workflow design, implementation feasibility, and operational impact.
- Support issue triage and escalation management for product-related questions or defects.
- Refine product processes, templates, and operating rhythms to improve team execution and delivery effectiveness.
- Build shared understanding across teams by documenting decisions, assumptions, requirements, and dependencies.
- Represent the Authorization Management product area in cross-functional meetings and working sessions.
- Collaborate with Product, Engineering, Design, Analytics, Operations, and other stakeholders to support successful product delivery.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of authorization management workflows, automation, accuracy, and scalability.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Expected Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Computer Science, Engineering, Healthcare Administration, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 7–12 years of relevant Product Management experience, with a focus on the US healthcare industry.
- Experience developing Product Requirement Documents (PRDs) in an AI-first software development lifecycle to capture product requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria for software development teams.
- Experience working with Engineering, Design, Analytics, and Operations partners in a cross-functional environment.
- Experience using customer feedback, market input, operational insights, and business data to inform product decisions.
- Experience analyzing performance metrics, operational trends, accuracy metrics, throughput data, or product usage data to identify and support improvements.
- Experience developing or supporting automation-first product strategies and leveraging AI capabilities to improve workflows or reduce manual effort.
- Familiarity with authorization management, prior authorization workflows, clinical coding workflows, revenue cycle operations, or related healthcare processes is preferred.
- Understanding of US healthcare processes, payer requirements, healthcare compliance requirements, and accurate and reliable workflow design.
- Experience managing multiple priorities and contributing to work across the product development lifecycle from concept through launch.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain product requirements, decisions, priorities, tradeoffs, and recommendations clearly to varied audiences.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and engineering pods while maintaining focus on customer needs and business objectives.
