About this role

The BlackRock Data Office (BDO) advances the firm's enterprise data strategy by building trusted, scalable, and governed data products that power investment, business, operational, and technology outcomes across BlackRock. As a member of the Data Office organization, you will partner closely with product managers, data stewards, platform engineers, software engineers, data scientists, and senior business stakeholders to deliver enterprise data capabilities that enable analytics, reporting, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and digital products. The team is at the forefront of shaping BlackRock's next generation data ecosystem and driving data as a strategic asset across the firm.

 

Your role and impact

As a Director, Data Engineering, you will provide technical leadership for enterprise-scale data platforms architect who wants to do more than produce designs or provide technical advice, and drive the delivery of high-impact data solutions that support critical business and investment outcomes. You will define architectural direction for complex engineering initiatives, establish best practices across teams, serve as a trusted partner to stakeholders across technology and the business, and measurable improvements in reliability, scalability, performance, and developer productivity.

 This role offers the opportunity to shape long-term data strategy, mentor engineering talent, and accelerate the firm's adoption of modern data and AI-enabled capabilities

Your responsibilities

The scope of this role also includes the following responsibilities:

• Define and evolve the target-state architecture for enterprise-scale data platforms, shared services, application programming interfaces (APIs), software development kits (SDKs), metadata, configuration, and data models, while guiding investments and technology adoption that improve scalability, reliability, performance, security, interoperability, and developer experience.
• Partner with engineering, product, and operations teams from technical discovery and prototyping through implementation, rollout, and adoption, validating architectural decisions against production outcomes and adjusting designs as needed.
• Define and drive technology strategy, target-state architecture, and engineering direction across application and data platforms while ensuring alignment with broader BlackRock Data Office strategy.
• Provide technical leadership for distributed application, integration, and data platforms, guiding critical design and architecture decisions across enterprise data technologies.
• Translate business priorities into executable technology roadmaps with planned delivery objectives.
• Establish engineering standards and ensure solutions are designed for quality, resilience, security, operational excellence, and governance.
• Partner with business and technology stakeholders to evaluate strategic trade-offs, manage dependencies, and maximize business outcomes.
• Develop senior engineering talent and foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
• Drive adoption of AI-enabled engineering capabilities and intelligent automation opportunities while maintaining appropriate risk and control standards.
  

Your experience

• Extensive experience in data platform architecture, data engineering, distributed systems, or related disciplines, including designing scalable, reliable, high-performance, and cost-effective enterprise data platforms across complex, multi-team environments.
• Experience designing governed data platforms for AI and structure, semi-structure and unstructured-data workloads, including object storage, document management, metadata, retrieval, vector or graph technologies, security, and operational reliability.
• Deep expertise in Python, Java, Scala, SQL, Snowflake, DBT, cloud-based data platforms, and large-scale distributed data analytics environments, with a proven track record of delivering enterprise-grade solutions.
• Strong experience designing and operating high-volume batch and real-time data pipelines, workflow orchestration solutions, data-transformation frameworks, and distributed event streaming architectures.
• Expertise in cloud and hybrid technology environments, including AWS, Microsoft Azure, containerized platforms, infrastructure automation, data governance, metadata management, lineage, and enterprise security controls.
• Strong understanding of application programming interfaces, data modeling, data-quality frameworks, observability, performance optimization, and modern software-engineering practices supporting scalable platforms.
• Experience leading technical teams, mentoring engineers, driving architectural decisions, and influencing organizational standards in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment.
• Exposure to machine learning, artificial intelligence, generative AI, and enterprise data patterns that enable AI-ready products and platforms.
• Proven architecture leadership and technical judgment across workflow orchestration, Data Operations, release management, observability, cloud infrastructure, and source-control and delivery platforms, with the ability to simplify systems and make pragmatic trade-offs.

Our hybrid work model
