Job Title: Design Engineer – Mechanical & Sheet Metal Design

Location: Itola, Near POR, Vadodara, Gujarat, India

Department: Engineering

Reports To: Engineering Manager

Position Type: Full-time

1. Job Summary

CK INSTO PVT LTD is looking for a skilled and motivated Design Engineer to join our engineering team. The candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and improving mechanical and electrical testing equipment, sheet metal enclosures, machine structures, and related components.

The candidate must have practical experience in SolidWorks, 3D modelling, 2D manufacturing drawings, sheet metal design, flat pattern development, and preparation of laser cutting drawings for external vendors.

The Design Engineer will coordinate with production, fabrication, purchase, assembly, and quality teams to ensure that all designs are technically accurate, cost-effective, easy to manufacture, and delivered within the project timeline.

2. Key Responsibilities

A. Product Design & Development

  • Design and develop mechanical components, machine structures, and assemblies using SolidWorks.
  • Create detailed 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings.
  • Design customized mechanical and electrical testing equipment according to customer requirements.
  • Prepare assembly drawings, part drawings, and fabrication drawings.
  • Select suitable materials, thicknesses, fasteners, and mechanical components.
  • Coordinate with the engineering team to develop new products and improve existing designs.
  • Ensure designs are practical, safe, reliable, and suitable for manufacturing and assembly.

B. Sheet Metal Design & Fabrication

  • Design sheet metal enclosures, control panel cabinets, machine covers, doors, brackets, mounting plates, and equipment frames.
  • Create sheet metal parts in SolidWorks using appropriate sheet metal features.
  • Select suitable sheet thicknesses, materials, bend radii, bend allowances, and reliefs.
  • Prepare flat patterns and unfolding drawings for laser cutting and bending operations.
  • Design components considering fabrication feasibility, material utilization, assembly requirements, and manufacturing cost.
  • Prepare drawings for laser cutting, bending, welding, drilling, tapping, and other fabrication processes.
  • Coordinate with the fabrication team to resolve issues related to bending, fitment, welding, and assembly.
  • Review fabricated components and recommend design modifications wherever necessary.

C. Laser Cutting Drawing & Vendor Coordination

  • Prepare laser cutting drawings and flat pattern files for sheet metal components.
  • Generate and verify DXF files from SolidWorks for laser cutting vendors.
  • Prepare part-wise drawings containing material grade, sheet thickness, dimensions, quantities, and other manufacturing requirements.
  • Ensure that DXF files are accurate, properly scaled, and suitable for CNC laser cutting.
  • Remove duplicate lines, overlapping geometry, unnecessary construction lines, and other drawing errors before releasing files.
  • Maintain correct part numbers, revision numbers, and drawing references.
  • Prepare and share laser cutting files, technical drawings, and cutting instructions with external vendors.
  • Coordinate with laser cutting vendors regarding material availability, sheet thickness, cutting requirements, tolerances, and delivery schedules.
  • Prepare and issue cutting lists and material requirements for vendor quotations and production planning.
  • Review vendor quotations and coordinate with the purchase department for cost and delivery comparisons.
  • Follow up with vendors for timely completion and delivery of laser-cut components.
  • Verify received components against approved drawings and specifications, coordinating with the quality and fabrication teams where required.
  • Resolve drawing-related queries raised by vendors and issue revised drawings when approved.

D. Engineering Drawings & Documentation

  • Prepare and maintain detailed 2D drawings, 3D models, assembly drawings, and exploded views.
  • Create and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) for machines, assemblies, and subassemblies.
  • Prepare part lists, cutting lists, material specifications, and fabrication documents.
  • Maintain proper drawing numbers, revision histories, and document control.
  • Ensure that only approved and updated drawings are released to production and vendors.
  • Maintain an organized digital library of SolidWorks files, DXF files, PDF drawings, and related engineering documents.

E. Manufacturing & Production Coordination

  • Coordinate with fabrication, welding, machining, powder coating, assembly, and wiring teams.
  • Provide technical support to production staff during manufacturing and assembly.
  • Clarify drawing-related doubts and resolve manufacturing issues.
  • Ensure that designed components fit correctly during assembly.
  • Visit the shop floor to understand manufacturing problems and implement design improvements.
  • Coordinate with the purchase team for the procurement of sheet metal, mechanical parts, and standard components.
  • Minimize rework, material wastage, and production delays through accurate drawings and design planning.

F. Technical Analysis & Problem Solving

  • Perform engineering calculations related to dimensions, loads, material selection, and mechanical strength as required.
  • Identify design errors and manufacturing difficulties and implement corrective actions.
  • Investigate fitment, alignment, bending, fabrication, and assembly problems.
  • Conduct design reviews and incorporate feedback from production, quality, and service teams.
  • Improve existing products to enhance reliability, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness.

G. Project Management & Continuous Improvement

  • Manage assigned design activities from initial concept through manufacturing and final assembly.
  • Coordinate with the Engineering Manager and other departments to meet project deadlines.
  • Track drawing release schedules and pending design requirements.
  • Suggest improvements in design standardization, sheet utilization, fabrication methods, and production efficiency.
  • Stay updated with SolidWorks features, sheet metal design practices, and manufacturing technologies.

3. Qualifications & Skills

Education

  • Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Relevant practical experience in mechanical design and sheet metal fabrication will be preferred.

Experience

  • 2–5 years of experience in mechanical design and product development.
  • Experience in sheet metal design, fabrication drawings, and laser cutting documentation is preferred.
  • Experience working with machine manufacturers, industrial equipment manufacturers, or electrical panel manufacturers will be an advantage.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks 3D modelling and 2D drafting.
  • Practical knowledge of SolidWorks Sheet Metal tools and flat pattern generation.
  • Experience generating DXF files for CNC laser cutting vendors.
  • Knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, bending, welding, drilling, tapping, and assembly.
  • Ability to prepare manufacturing drawings, BOMs, and cutting lists.
  • Understanding of material grades, sheet thicknesses, tolerances, bend allowances, and fabrication processes.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD and PDF drawing preparation will be an advantage.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other engineering documentation tools.

4. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Performance will be evaluated based on:

  • Accuracy and quality of SolidWorks models and manufacturing drawings.
  • Timely completion and release of design drawings.
  • Accuracy of DXF files and laser cutting drawings provided to vendors.
  • Reduction in drawing errors, material wastage, and fabrication rework.
  • Timely coordination with laser cutting and fabrication vendors.
  • Timely delivery of drawings, BOMs, and cutting lists.
  • Reduction in design-related production and assembly issues.
  • Compliance with drawing revision control and documentation procedures.
  • Successful completion of assigned design projects within agreed timelines.

5. Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate should have strong practical knowledge of mechanical design, sheet metal fabrication, and industrial equipment manufacturing.

The candidate must be capable of independently designing machine structures and sheet metal components, preparing accurate SolidWorks drawings and flat patterns, generating laser cutting DXF files, and coordinating with external vendors to ensure that components are manufactured according to approved specifications.

The candidate should also be comfortable working directly with the production and fabrication teams to solve technical problems and improve product quality.

Important: Practical experience in sheet metal design, SolidWorks flat pattern generation, laser cutting DXF preparation, and vendor coordination will be an important requirement for this position.
