Job Description
Position Overview
We are looking for a Customs Brokerage Manager to lead our Customs Brokerage department in Chennai. The successful candidate will manage customs brokerage operations, ensure strong customs compliance, develop people, improve operational efficiency, support customer relationships, and drive profitable growth.
This role requires strong customs knowledge, hands-on leadership, attention to detail, and the ability to work closely with customers, customs authorities, service providers, and internal teams.
Key Responsibilities
Customs Brokerage Operations
- Lead daily Customs Brokerage operations.
- Manage service execution, workflow, documentation, and operational controls.
- Ensure files are processed, logged, monitored, and closed correctly.
- Resolve operational issues in a timely and professional manner.
- Build efficient processes without compromising compliance or controls.
Compliance and Regulatory Control
- Ensure compliance with customs regulations and other government agency requirements.
- Monitor customs entries, rejections, discrepancies, and post-entry activity.
- Work with compliance stakeholders to identify recurring issues and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure company policies, controls, tools, and systems are properly implemented.
- Stay current with customs and regulatory changes and train the team accordingly.
People Leadership
- Manage staffing, structure, and resource planning for the department.
- Coach, mentor, and develop team members.
- Conduct performance reviews and provide regular feedback.
- Ensure mandatory training is completed on time.
- Build a knowledgeable and capable customs brokerage team.
Customer Service and Implementation
- Support new customer onboarding and implementation.
- Ensure customer-specific customs requirements are clearly documented and followed.
- Maintain strong communication with customers and internal stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain relationships with current brokerage customers.
- Support customer presentations, service updates, and issue resolution.
Financial Management
- Ensure files are billed accurately and on time.
- Review billing documents, cost recovery, and invoice accuracy.
- Monitor customer A/R and support timely resolution of invoice discrepancies.
- Review department P&L and understand client mix, revenue, file types, and operational complexity.
- Review third-party broker invoices against tariffs where applicable.
Sales and Growth Support
- Work with Sales, Account Management, Customer Retention, and internal product teams.
- Support retention and growth of existing brokerage customers.
- Help develop new customs brokerage opportunities.
- Provide regular updates on service execution, customer needs, and market opportunities.
Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent qualification.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in Customs Brokerage.
- Preferred G or F qualified
- Strong hands-on knowledge of customs clearance processes.
- Customs brokerage certification, where applicable.
- Strong communication and presentation skills.
- Ability to work with customers, customs authorities, service providers, and internal teams.
- Strong analytical and reporting skills.
- Good computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and related business applications.
- Good command of English.
Preferred Skills
- Experience leading a customs brokerage or compliance-focused team.
- Strong understanding of customs regulations and government agency requirements.
- Ability to manage operational discipline, compliance, and customer service together.
- Strong problem-solving skills and high attention to detail.
- Ability to coach and develop people.
- Experience working in a global logistics environment.
