Job Description – Mechanical Design Engineer | Crane Manufacturing
Job Summary: We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer with experience or strong knowledge in industrial cranes and material handling equipment. The candidate will be responsible for designing crane structures, lifting mechanisms, mechanical components, and assemblies, along with preparing detailed manufacturing and fabrication drawings.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and develop EOT cranes, overhead cranes, gantry cranes, jib cranes, and material handling equipment.
- Design crane components including:
- Girders and end carriages
- Hoist and trolley arrangements
- Drum, sheave, hook and rope assemblies
- Gearboxes and coupling arrangements
- Wheels, wheel blocks, shafts and bearings
- Brakes and lifting mechanisms
- Platforms, ladders and access structures
- Prepare 3D models, 2D manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, fabrication drawings, and BOMs.
- Perform mechanical design calculations for load capacity, wheel loads, shaft sizing, gearbox selection, brakes, ropes, drums, bearings, and structural members.
- Select suitable materials, bought-out components, motors, gearboxes, bearings, wheels, brakes, and other crane components.
- Apply GD&T, fits, tolerances, and welding/fabrication requirements.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable crane design standards and customer specifications.
- Coordinate with production and fabrication teams to ensure designs are practical and manufacturable.
- Support procurement and suppliers with technical specifications and drawings.
- Review fabrication and assembly issues and provide engineering solutions.
- Modify designs based on site requirements, customer feedback, inspection reports, and manufacturing requirements.
- Participate in prototype testing, inspection, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
- Maintain engineering drawings, revisions, BOMs, and technical documentation.
Required Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of machine design and mechanical engineering fundamentals.
- Experience/knowledge of crane and lifting equipment design.
- Good understanding of:
- Structural steel fabrication
- Welding and machining
- Shafts, bearings, couplings and gears
- Wire ropes, drums and sheaves
- Motors, gearboxes and brakes
- Bolted and welded joints
- Fits, tolerances and GD&T
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks/Creo/CATIA/NX.
- Ability to prepare and interpret detailed manufacturing and fabrication drawings.
- Knowledge of DFMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly).
- Ability to perform engineering calculations and select components based on design loads.
Educational Qualification: B.E./B.Tech/Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
Experience: 3-5 years: Freshers with strong CAD, machine design, and mechanical fundamentals may be considered.
- 2–6 years: Experience in crane manufacturing, material handling equipment, heavy engineering, machine design, or industrial equipment preferred.
- Experience with EOT/gantry cranes will be an advantage.
- Preferred knowledge: Crane design codes and standards such as IS/IEC/FEM/DIN, as applicable.
- Crane classification and duty cycles.
- Structural design and stability calculations.
- Basic FEA knowledge.
- Knowledge of crane inspection, testing, and commissioning.
- Experience with ERP/PDM/PLM systems.
