Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Role Overview

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will lead the design and development of complex mechanical components and machinery from concept through to production. You will ensure that all equipment meets the highest standards of performance, reliability, and manufacturability. This role requires a blend of deep technical expertise, hands-on machine design skills, and leadership capabilities. You will act as a key mentor to junior engineers, ensuring adherence to design standards while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to meet project timelines.

Key Responsibilities

• End-to-End Design: Lead the mechanical design and development of complex wire and cable machinery from initial concept through prototyping, validation, and final production.
• CAD Modelling & Detailing: Create, review, and optimise detailed 3D CAD models and 2D manufacturing drawings. Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and perform rigorous tolerance stack-up analysis.
• Engineering Calculations: Perform foundational design calculations, material selection, component sourcing, and basic Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to ensure structural integrity and efficiency.
• Mentorship & Quality Control: Guide and mentor junior design engineers, conduct comprehensive design reviews, and ensure the engineering team's output meets stringent safety and company standards.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with electronics, manufacturing, assembly, and quality assurance teams to resolve design conflicts and streamline production.
• Testing & Validation: Support prototype builds, hands-on testing, and design validation processes. Troubleshoot engineering challenges and drive continuous improvement (CI) initiatives.
• External Alignment: Participate in technical discussions with customers and suppliers to align engineering expectations, select components, and deliver custom solutions.

Required Skills:

• Experience: Proven experience in Design Engineering for complex mechanical systems, heavy machinery, or industrial automation equipment (experience in automotive, heavy machinery, or industrial equipment sectors is highly preferred).
• Core Design Expertise: Strong foundation in Machine Design, including mechanism design, Design for Manufacturability (DFM), and Design for Reliability (DFR).
• Product Development: Demonstrated history of managing product designs through the full lifecycle—from concept generation and prototyping to market launch.
• Technical Proficiency: Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD software and 2D detailing tools. Deep understanding of various manufacturing processes (e.g., precision machining, casting, heavy fabrication, sheet metal, and plastics).
• Analytical Skills: Strong problem-solving capabilities, including tolerance analysis and engineering mathematics.
• Leadership & Communication: Exceptional communication, teamwork, and project management skills, with a proven ability to lead engineering deliverables and mentor junior talent.
