Job Description
We are looking for a UX/UI Designer with 3–4 years of hands-on experience to design intuitive, accessible, and visually compelling digital products. In this role you will own the end-to-end design process — from understanding user needs and business goals to delivering polished, developer-ready interfaces. You will collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, and stakeholders to translate complex requirements into seamless user experiences.
In line with our organisational commitment to working smarter and faster, a key expectation of this role is the ability to integrate AI tools meaningfully into the design workflow — using them to accelerate research, ideation, prototyping, content generation, and iteration without compromising on craft or design quality. We are looking for someone who treats AI as a force multiplier for their creativity and productivity, not a replacement for sound design judgement.
2. Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design of features and products across web and mobile platforms, from concept through to final delivery.
- Translate business requirements and user needs into clear user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs.
- Partner with product and engineering teams throughout the product lifecycle to ensure designs are feasible, scalable, and faithfully implemented.
- Contribute to and maintain the design system, ensuring consistency across all touchpoints.
- Conduct and synthesise user research, usability testing, and design validation to inform decisions.
- Use AI-powered tools to speed up routine and exploratory work — generating variations, drafting copy, summarising research, and producing assets — so more time is spent on high-value design thinking.
- Present and defend design decisions to stakeholders with clear rationale grounded in user needs and data.
- Stay current with design trends, accessibility standards, and emerging AI tooling, and share learnings with the team.
3. Core UX Responsibilities
- Conduct user research through interviews, surveys, contextual inquiry, and competitive analysis.
- Develop user personas, journey maps, empathy maps, and service blueprints.
- Define information architecture, navigation structures, and user flows.
- Create low- and mid-fidelity wireframes and interactive prototypes for testing.
- Plan and run usability tests, synthesise findings, and translate insights into design improvements.
- Use AI tools to accelerate research synthesis — clustering qualitative feedback, summarising interview transcripts, and surfacing patterns — while applying critical judgement to validate outputs.
- Advocate for the user throughout the product development process and champion a research-informed culture.
4. Core UI Responsibilities
- Design high-fidelity, pixel-perfect interfaces that are visually consistent and on-brand.
- Build and evolve reusable UI components, patterns, and design tokens within the design system.
- Apply strong visual design fundamentals: typography, colour theory, spacing, hierarchy, and layout.
- Create interactive prototypes that communicate motion, transitions, and micro-interactions.
- Ensure designs meet responsive and adaptive requirements across devices and screen sizes.
- Prepare clean, well-documented design handoffs with specifications, assets, and annotations for developers.
- Leverage AI-assisted design features (e.g. layout suggestions, asset generation, image editing) to produce and refine visuals more efficiently.
- Uphold accessibility standards (WCAG) in all visual and interaction decisions.
5. Required Skills & Qualifications
- 3–4 years of professional experience in UX and UI design for digital products.
- A strong portfolio demonstrating end-to-end design work across web and/or mobile.
- Bachelor's degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Visual Communication, or a related field — or equivalent practical experience.
- Proficiency in industry-standard design tools, especially Figma.
- Solid understanding of user-centred design principles, interaction design, and visual design.
- Demonstrated ability to use AI tools to enhance and speed up the design process, with examples of how they have been applied in real work.
- Experience working within and contributing to design systems.
- Strong understanding of responsive design and accessibility best practices.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate design rationale.
- Comfortable working in agile, cross-functional teams.
6. Preferred Skills
- Experience with motion design and prototyping advanced micro-interactions.
- Familiarity with front-end fundamentals (HTML, CSS, basic JavaScript) to collaborate effectively with developers.
- Experience designing for design systems at scale or building one from the ground up.
- Knowledge of data-informed design and working with analytics tools.
- Experience prompting and fine-tuning AI tools for design-specific outcomes (e.g. crafting effective prompts for generative imagery, copy, or UI exploration).
- Exposure to designing AI-driven product features and conversational or generative interfaces.
- Basic understanding of UX writing and content strategy.
7. Tools & Technologies
- Design & Prototyping: Figma (primary), Adobe XD, Sketch
- Visual & Asset Creation: Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator)
- AI-Assisted Tools: Generative design and image tools (e.g. Midjourney, DALL·E, Adobe Firefly), AI writing assistants (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude), Figma AI features, and AI-powered research/synthesis tools
- Collaboration & Whiteboarding: FigJam, Miro
- Handoff & Documentation: Figma Dev Mode, Zeplin
- Research & Testing: Maze, UserTesting, Hotjar, or similar
- Project Management: Jira, Trello, Notion, or equivalent
8. Design Process & Methodologies
- Apply user-centred and design-thinking approaches across the product lifecycle.
- Work within established frameworks such as the Double Diamond (Discover, Define, Develop, Deliver).
- Follow Lean UX and Agile practices, iterating quickly based on feedback and validation.
- Move fluidly through the cycle of research → ideation → prototyping → testing → refinement.
- Incorporate AI tools at appropriate stages to compress timelines — for example, rapid ideation, content drafting, and generating design variations — while maintaining rigorous human review.
- Validate designs through data, usability testing, and stakeholder feedback before delivery.
9. Key Competencies
- User empathy: Deep understanding of and advocacy for the end user.
- Visual craft: A strong eye for detail, aesthetics, and consistency.
- Problem solving: Ability to break down complex problems into clear, elegant solutions.
- Adaptability: Comfort with ambiguity and a willingness to adopt new tools and ways of working, including AI.
- Collaboration: Works well across disciplines and communicates clearly with non-designers.
- Ownership: Takes accountability for work and drives projects to completion.
- Curiosity & growth mindset: Continuously learns and experiments with new methods and technologies.
- Efficiency: Balances speed and quality, using the right tools — including AI — to deliver more in less time.
10. Performance Expectations / Success Metrics
- Consistently delivers high-quality, on-brand designs within agreed timelines.
- Designs measurably improve key product metrics (e.g. task completion rates, conversion, engagement, reduced drop-off).
- Demonstrates effective adoption of AI tools that improve speed and output without sacrificing quality, contributing to overall team velocity.
- Maintains and strengthens design consistency through disciplined use of the design system.
- Receives positive feedback from cross-functional partners on collaboration and communication.
- Usability and accessibility issues are identified and resolved early in the design process.
- Actively shares knowledge, including AI workflows and best practices, with the wider team.
11. Portfolio Requirements
- 3–5 case studies showing end-to-end design work, not just final screens.
- Clear articulation of the problem, your role, the process you followed, and the outcome.
- Evidence of UX thinking: research, user flows, wireframes, and iterations — not only polished visuals.
- Examples of high-fidelity UI design and, where possible, contributions to a design system.
- At least one example demonstrating how you have used AI tools to support or accelerate your process, with a brief explanation of the approach and the impact.
- Where available, measurable results or outcomes tied to your design work.
