CNC / VMC Programmer – Roles & Responsibilities

Position: CNC / VMC Programmer

Job Summary

The CNC/VMC Programmer is responsible for preparing CNC programs, setting up machines, selecting tools, optimizing machining processes, and ensuring production of quality components as per engineering drawings and customer requirements.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

Programming

Develop CNC/VMC programs using engineering drawings and CAD/CAM software.

Prepare and modify CNC programs for new and existing components.

Optimize machining parameters to improve productivity and reduce cycle time.

Perform program prove-out and validation before production.

Machine Setup

Select suitable cutting tools, holders, and fixtures.

Set work offsets, tool offsets, and machine parameters.

Conduct machine setup and first-piece approval.

Ensure proper clamping and alignment of workpieces.

Production Support

Monitor machining operations and troubleshoot programming issues.

Improve process efficiency and reduce machining costs.

Coordinate with operators to ensure smooth production.

Support production planning to meet delivery schedules.

Quality Control

Verify dimensions as per drawings and quality standards.

Use measuring instruments such as Vernier Calipers, Micrometers, Height Gauges, and Bore Gauges.

Maintain process capability and product quality.

Investigate and correct machining defects.

Documentation

Maintain program records and setup sheets.

Update process documentation and tooling lists.

Record cycle times and process improvements.

Follow company quality management procedures.

Maintenance & Safety

Follow machine safety procedures and PPE requirements.

Ensure proper machine housekeeping and 5S practices.

Report machine abnormalities and maintenance requirements.

Adhere to all safety and environmental regulations.
