Job Description
About the Role
We're looking for someone who genuinely enjoys engaging with people and driving real habit change specifically around waste segregation and home composting. This is a ground-level, community-facing role under our IEC (Information, Education, Communication) and BCC (Behaviour Change Communication) project on solid waste management.
You'll spend a good chunk of your time at ward meetings, RWA gatherings, government events, and street-level awareness drives explaining why segregation matters, demonstrating how home composting works, and helping citizens actually adopt these practices rather than just hear about them once and forget. Alongside that, you'll be building relationships with local leaders, coordinating with government officials, and mentoring your own team on the ground.
This role suits someone equally comfortable speaking to 50 strangers at a public event and sitting with one hesitant household explaining why wet and dry waste need separate bins.
Why This Role Exists
Many citizens don't yet know what waste segregation means, why it matters, or how to practise it correctly at home. This role exists to close that gap first through basic awareness, then through consistent daily habit.
The larger goal is civic sense, not just information. Citizens need to see cleanliness and segregation as their own responsibility toward their locality not a one-off task done only for a campaign or a government inspection. Once that mindset takes hold, the habit sticks and spreads to neighbours on its own.
You'll need to keep the explanation simple and practical: why wet and dry waste must be kept separate, how home composting helps, and why a clean neighbourhood benefits everyone living in it. The same explanation should make sense to a housewife, a shopkeeper, or a schoolchild alike.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
Public engagement & training
- Speak at public gatherings, ward meetings, and government-organised events on waste segregation and its importance
- Conduct hands-on home composting demonstrations and training sessions for households
- Simplify technical waste-management concepts into language that lands with everyday citizens
- Build basic awareness on what waste segregation is and why it matters, for citizens who may not know this already
- Build citizens' understanding of civic sense why cleanliness and segregation are a shared community responsibility, not just a rule to follow
- Help households move from awareness to consistent daily practice, and eventually to encouraging their neighbours to do the same
- Use relatable, local examples to explain what happens to waste after it leaves the house, so citizens understand the real impact of not segregating
Campaign planning & execution
- Plan and lead IEC/BCC campaigns at ward level, government events, and public spots
- Design daily/weekly awareness drive plans and adjust them based on ground feedback
- Track campaign reach and effectiveness, and course-correct where engagement is low
Local relationship building
- Identify ward-level local leaders (councillors, RWA heads, community influencers) and build working relationships with them
- Use these relationships to create ground-level buzz and credibility for the campaign
- Liaise regularly with government officials for event approvals, logistics, and coordination
Team & people management
- Build the capacity of your ground team training them subject-wise on segregation, composting, and communication techniques
- Handle day-to-day citizen disputes or resistance at the ground level with patience and problem-solving, rather than escalating everything upward
- Motivate the team to sustain energy across long, repetitive field campaigns
Documentation & reporting
- Maintain daily/weekly activity reports of field visits, training sessions, and campaigns
- Prepare presentations and reports for internal review and for government stakeholders
- Document best practices and replicate them across other wards/zones
We're Looking For a Mass Communicator Who Cares About Clean Cities
This role is first and foremost a communication role we need someone who can command a room, simplify a message, and get it to stick across ward meetings, government events, and street-level campaigns. Waste segregation happens to be the subject, but the core skill we're hiring for is the ability to move people to action through communication.
That said, this work lands far better coming from someone who actually cares about seeing their city get cleaner someone who notices civic issues around them, has an opinion on why cleanliness matters, and brings genuine energy to the subject rather than just delivering a script. That combination a strong communicator who's personally invested in the cause is what makes the message land and stick with citizens, rather than sounding like another government announcement.
.
Who We're Looking For
- Strong communicator confident on stage, but equally comfortable in a one-on-one conversation; soft-spoken with the ability to hold a room
- Fluency in Gujarati (spoken and conversational) is essential, along with working proficiency in Hindi/English
- A genuine environment enthusiast someone who actually cares about cleaner localities and sustainable habits, not just someone reciting talking points about waste management
- Able to connect the "why" of segregation to everyday civic sense, and make that connection feel personal to the citizen, not preachy
- Genuine interest in environment, sustainability, or waste management (prior exposure is a plus, not mandatory)
- Comfortable with public speaking and unafraid of large, unfamiliar crowds
- Good report-writing skills able to convert field observations into clear, structured reports
- Working knowledge of MS Office / Google Slides for presentations
- Someone who thinks on their feet able to de-escalate a disagreement with a citizen without waiting for instructions
- Self-driven and comfortable working primarily on ground, not from a desk
- Prior experience in community mobilisation, social work, or field campaigns is a strong plus
Good to Have
- Prior experience working with government departments or on government-funded projects
- Basic understanding of composting techniques or urban local body (ULB) functioning
