Job Description
Job Description: Design Engineer — Special Purpose Machines & Packaging Automation
Department: Design & Engineering
Reports To: CEO
Location: Peenya 2nd Stage, Bangalore
Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Experience Required: 3–8 years (adjust band per level being hired)
About the Company
We are a reputed manufacturer of special-purpose machines (SPM) and automation systems, with a strong focus on packaging equipment for industries such as [FMCG / Pharma / Food & Beverage / Consumer Goods]. Our machines are engineered and built in-house — from concept to commissioning — and deployed at customer sites across India and globally. We are looking for a hands-on Design Engineer who can turn customer requirements into robust, manufacturable machine designs and stay engaged through production and field troubleshooting.
Role Summary
The Design Engineer will own the mechanical design lifecycle of packaging machines and automation systems — from concept generation and feasibility, through detailed engineering (2D/3D), to supporting fabrication, assembly, and on-site commissioning. This is a design-to-shop-floor role: you will not just draw machines, you will see them built, debug them, and improve them based on real production and field feedback.
Key Responsibilities
Concept Development
Study customer specifications (product to be packed, speed/output, format, space constraints, utilities) and translate them into machine concepts and layouts.
Evaluate mechanism alternatives (cam-driven, servo-driven, pneumatic, etc.) for cost, cycle time, reliability, and ease of manufacture.
Prepare concept sketches, GA layouts, and basic cycle/timing diagrams for internal review and customer approval.
Conduct design reviews with cross-functional teams (electrical, automation/PLC, procurement, production) before freezing the design.
Detailed Engineering & Drawings
Develop detailed 3D models and assemblies in SolidWorks, and 2D manufacturing/GA drawings in AutoCAD/SolidWorks, complete with GD&T, tolerances, and BOM.
Perform basic design calculations (strength, motor/gearbox sizing, cam profiles, structural rigidity) and select standard components (bearings, actuators, pneumatics, timing belts, servo drives) from vendor catalogues.
Maintain drawing standards, revision control, and engineering documentation (BOM, part numbers, drawing registers) as per internal ISO/quality procedures.
Prepare and update spare parts lists, operation & maintenance manuals, and installation drawings.
Production Support & Supervision
Work closely with the shop floor during fabrication, machining, and assembly to ensure the design intent is followed correctly.
Resolve fit, tolerance, and assembly issues that arise during build, and issue corrected/updated drawings promptly.
Support procurement with technical clarifications for outsourced/bought-out components.
Participate in in-house trial runs and dry-runs of the machine prior to dispatch.
Troubleshooting & Field Support
Provide design-level troubleshooting support during machine commissioning at customer sites (directly or by supporting the service/commissioning team remotely).
Analyze recurring field issues (wear, jamming, misalignment, breakdowns) and translate them into design improvements/ECNs (Engineering Change Notes).
Maintain a feedback loop between field performance and future design revisions to improve machine reliability (MTBF) and reduce customer complaints.
Continuous Improvement
Contribute to value engineering and cost reduction initiatives without compromising performance or safety.
Standardize commonly used sub-assemblies/modules across machine platforms to reduce design and manufacturing lead time.
Stay updated on packaging automation trends, servo/motion control technologies, and relevant safety standards (CE/machine safety norms, as applicable).
Required Qualifications & Experience
Education: Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
Experience: 3–8 years in design of special purpose machines, packaging machinery, or automation equipment. Experience in a machine-building or capital equipment manufacturing environment is strongly preferred (not a pure design-consultancy background).
Software Proficiency:
SolidWorks — strong hands-on skills in part modeling, assembly design, sheet metal, and drawing creation (mandatory).
AutoCAD — proficient in 2D detailing and GA drawings (mandatory).
Working knowledge of PDM/PLM or drawing revision-control systems is an advantage.
Technical Knowledge:
Sound understanding of mechanisms (cams, gears, linkages, indexing systems), GD&T, tolerance stack-up, and DFM/DFA principles.
Familiarity with pneumatics, basic servo motion concepts, and standard machine components (bearings, ball screws, linear guides, timing belts).
Exposure to sheet metal fabrication, machining processes, and welding practices used in machine frame/structure design.
Other Skills:
Ability to read and interpret customer specifications and convert them into engineering deliverables independently.
Comfortable spending time on the shop floor and, when required, travelling to customer sites for commissioning/troubleshooting support.
Strong problem-solving orientation, attention to detail, and ability to work under project timelines.
Preferred (Good to Have)
Experience specifically in packaging machinery categories such as cartoning, case packing, form-fill-seal (FFS), labeling, palletizing, or filling/capping systems.
Basic understanding of PLC/HMI-based automation to coordinate effectively with the electrical/automation design team.
Exposure to FEA/simulation tools for structural validation.
Key Performance Indicators (Indicative)
On-time release of design/drawings as per project schedule.
First-time-right designs — minimum design-related rework/ECNs post-release.
Reduction in field complaints/breakdowns attributable to design issues.
Turnaround time for resolving shop-floor and field design queries.
What We Offer
Opportunity to work on complete machine-building projects end-to-end, not isolated drawing tasks.
Exposure to diverse packaging technologies and customer industries.
A collaborative environment with direct visibility into how your designs perform on the shop floor and in the field.
