Job Description: Oracle Database Migration Engineer 

Lead SME for High-Stakes, Zero-Downtime Oracle Database Migrations

Position Summary

As the Oracle Database Migration Engineer, you will serve as the lead Subject Matter Expert (SME) for architecting and executing enterprise-scale Oracle database migration projects. This role is critical for ensuring seamless, zero-downtime migrations of mission-critical workloads to modernized environments, including cloud-native architectures. You will directly oversee project planning, risk management, technical execution, and validation, working collaboratively with cross-functional teams and client stakeholders. Your deep expertise in Oracle migration tools and methodologies will be essential in delivering robust, high-performance, and resilient solutions for complex, high-stakes environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and lead the end-to-end architecture of Oracle database migration projects, with an emphasis on zero-downtime or near-zero-downtime strategies.
• Act as the principal SME on migration best practices, providing technical leadership and mentorship to project teams and stakeholders.
• Develop and implement detailed migration plans, including source/target mapping, downtime minimization, rollback strategies, and post-migration validation.
• Leverage advanced Oracle migration technologies (GoldenGate, Zero Downtime Migration [ZDM], Data Pump, RMAN,Dataguard, storage replication, etc.) to achieve business objectives.
• Architect and deploy cloud-native solutions, optimizing for performance, scalability, and operational resilience.
• Identify, assess, and mitigate migration risks—covering data integrity, security, compliance, and business continuity.
• Establish and enforce performance benchmarks, monitoring procedures, and validation protocols pre- and post-migration.
• Coordinate with infrastructure, application, and security teams to ensure holistic migration success.
• Document migration processes, lessons learned, and best practices for ongoing organizational knowledge transfer.

Technical Responsibilities

• Architect zero-downtime migration solutions using Oracle GoldenGate and/or ZDM for both on-premises and cloud targets.
• Develop and execute automation scripts for migration, validation, and rollback using Shell, Python, or equivalent scripting languages.
• Implement robust performance tuning, data consistency checks, and post-migration validation frameworks.
• Apply Oracle Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA) principles to migration planning and execution.
• Utilize Oracle Data Pump and RMAN for data movement, backup, and recovery operations as required.
• Integrate storage replication and cloud-native services where appropriate to support migration scenarios.

Core Technologies Expertise

• Oracle GoldenGate (real-time replication and zero-downtime migrations)
• Oracle Zero Downtime Migration (ZDM)
• Oracle Data Pump (expdp/impdp)
• Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN)
• Oracle Enterprise Manager, Data Guard, and related high-availability tools
• Cloud platforms: Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud (preferred)
• Storage replication technologies (SAN/NAS, block replication, etc.)
• Database performance monitoring and profiling tools

Performance Tuning and Validation

• Conduct comprehensive pre-migration assessments to baseline current performance and identify optimization opportunities.
• Validate data integrity, application functionality, and performance post-migration through automated and manual testing.
• Implement monitoring solutions to track migration progress and rapidly detect anomalies.
• Lead performance tuning initiatives to ensure migrated environments meet or exceed business SLAs.

Required Qualifications

• 8+ years of hands-on experience in Oracle database administration, engineering, and migration.
• Proven track record of leading large-scale Oracle migration projects with zero or near-zero downtime requirements.
• Expert-level proficiency in Oracle migration tools: GoldenGate, ZDM, Data Pump, RMAN.
• Strong knowledge of cloud-native architectures and migration to public/private cloud platforms.
• Experience with high-availability, disaster recovery, and MAA principles.
• Advanced skills in SQL, PL/SQL, and scripting languages (Shell, Python, or similar).
• Solid understanding of operating systems (Linux/Unix/Windows) and storage systems.
• Excellent problem-solving, communication, and documentation skills.
• Ability to work cross-functionally in high-pressure, time-sensitive migration windows.

Education and Certifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field.
• Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) – Database Administration (required)
• Oracle GoldenGate Certification (preferred)
• Relevant cloud certifications (OCI, AWS, Azure, or GCP) are highly desirable

Work Environment and Flexibility
