In this role, you will own the end?to?end BMS system lifecycle—from requirements definition and system architecture to validation, field deployment, and continuous improvement. You will act as the technical authority for BMS within the BESS platform, mentoring engineers and collaborating closely with power electronics (PCS), EMS, grid integration, and validation teams.
This position demands strong system?level thinking, deep BMS expertise, and technical leadership to ensure safety, scalability, reliability, and long?term performance of field?deployed energy storage assets.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Ownership
- Act as technical lead and subject?matter expert (SME) for BMS architecture in stationary BESS products.
- Own system?level BMS requirements, interfaces, and design decisions.
- Review and approve BMS designs, algorithms, and implementation from junior engineers.
- Mentor and technically guide engineers across firmware, validation, and system integration.
BESS Controller & System Design
- Lead the design and development of BESS controller architecture, coordinating BMS, PCS, EMS, and SCADA interfaces.
- Define system?level control strategies for long?duration, high?capacity battery systems.
- Ensure scalability across multi?rack, containerized, and MW/MWh?scale deployments.
BMS Firmware & Algorithms
- Architect and guide development of RTOS?based BMS firmware (C / C++).
- Lead implementation and tuning of advanced BMS features:
- Cell and module monitoring
- Passive and active cell balancing algorithms
- Protection, derating, and control logic
- Ensure firmware follows safety?critical and reliability?focused design practices.
Communication & Integration
- Define and govern communication architectures:
- CAN / CAN FD for internal BESS communication
- Modbus RTU / TCP for EMS, PCS, and SCADA
- Own interface specifications and sequencing between BMS, PCS, and EMS.
- Support grid?interface and system commissioning requirements.
Validation, Safety & HIL
- Lead HIL (Hardware?in?the?Loop) strategy and execution for BMS and system?level validation.
- Define test coverage for:
- Normal and edge?case operation
- Grid?relevant fault and abuse scenarios
- Architect and tune diagnostics and protection strategies for:
- Electrical faults (over/under voltage, current)
- Thermal faults
- Insulation resistance and communication failures
- Ensure compliance with relevant stationary storage safety and reliability standards.
OTA, Cybersecurity & Field Reliability
- Architect secure OTA firmware update frameworks for long?life, field?deployed BESS.
- Ensure robustness, fail?safe operation, and rollback strategies.
- Drive cybersecurity awareness for connected energy systems.
Product Lifecycle & Field Support
- Lead technical support for:
- Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)
- Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)
- Commissioning and deployments
- Perform system?level root cause analysis (RCA) of field issues.
- Feed lessons learned into design, firmware, and validation improvements.
- Own technical documentation, system specifications, and validation reports.
Required Skills & Experience
Core Technical Expertise
- 12–15 years of experience in BMS, embedded systems, or energy storage product development.
- Strong hands?on expertise in:
- RTOS?based embedded firmware (C / C++)
- CAN / CAN FD / Modbus communication
- Cell balancing algorithms and SOC/SOH?related considerations
- HIL validation and fault diagnostics
- Experience with microcontrollers and BMS ICs used in stationary storage systems.
- Deep understanding of Li?ion battery electro?thermal behavior, aging, and safety limits.
- Proficiency with embedded debugging tools (JTAG, CAN tools, logic analyzers).
- Experience working with Git and structured product development processes.
System & Product Experience
- Proven experience delivering stationary BESS products (C&I or utility?scale preferred).
- Strong understanding of BMS–PCS–EMS interaction at system level.
- Familiarity with grid?relevant operating and fault scenarios in stationary storage.
- Exposure to high?voltage battery systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, Embedded Systems, or related field.
- Knowledge of IEC / UL standards applicable to stationary energy storage.
- Exposure to functional safety concepts and safety?critical design.
- Awareness of cybersecurity requirements for OTA and connected infrastructure assets.
Soft Skills & Leadership Expectations
- Strong system?level and architectural thinking.
- Ability to lead technically while remaining hands?on.
- Excellent cross?functional communication with firmware, hardware, validation, EMS, and power electronics teams.
- High sense of ownership, safety, and product reliability.
- Comfortable making design trade?offs under schedule and field constraints.
