The Release Train Engineer (RTE) serves as a central figure in organisations using the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) or similar large-scale agile approaches. In addition to orchestrating and facilitating the Agile Release Train (ART), the RTE is responsible for line management of Scrum Masters and Agile Practitioners, ensuring that coaching, career development, and performance management are provided consistently across teams. As a servant leader, the RTE drives successful delivery and fosters the growth and professional development of agile talent within the enterprise. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Facilitate Program Events: Plan, organise, and lead all major ART ceremonies, including Program Increment (PI) Planning, Scrum of Scrums, System Demos, and Inspect and Adapt workshops. 
  • Remove Impediments: Identify and resolve obstacles that hinder team progress, collaborating with stakeholders at every level. 
  • Coach Agile Practices: Mentor Scrum Masters, Product Owners, Agile Practitioners, and team members in agile principles and SAFe best practices. Empower teams to self-organise and foster a culture of continuous learning. 
  • Coordinate Delivery: Align teams to shared objectives and timelines, manage dependencies, and prioritise deliverables according to business value. 
  • Track and Communicate Progress: Maintain visual management systems and provide transparent status updates, risk logs, and performance metrics. 
  • Manage Risks and Dependencies: Identify, track, and escalate risks and inter-team dependencies, facilitating solution-oriented discussions. 
  • Drive Relentless Improvement: Lead retrospectives and promote experimentation, sharing of best practices, and adoption of actionable improvements. 
  • Foster Collaboration: Build a collaborative environment across teams and stakeholders, encouraging knowledge sharing and alignment on goals. 
  • Line Management: Oversee the professional development, performance, and well-being of Scrum Masters and Agile Practitioners. Conduct regular one-on-one meetings, facilitate goal setting, and provide feedback and coaching. Drive recruitment, onboarding, and progression for agile roles within the organisation. 

Required Skills and Qualifications 

  • Agile Experience: Proven experience in agile roles such as Scrum Master, Agile Coach, Project/Program Manager, or Release Train Engineer minimum 5 years experience
  • Line Management: Demonstrated capability in line management or people leadership, particularly with Scrum Masters and Agile Practitioners, including experience with coaching, performance reviews, and career development. 
  • SAFe and Agile Frameworks: Deep knowledge of SAFe and other agile methodologies, with a preference for SAFe Release Train Engineer certification. 
  • Facilitation and Coaching: Strong skills in mentoring, team building, and conflict resolution across diverse teams. 
  • Communication: Clear and persuasive written and verbal communication for all levels of the organisation. 
  • Organisational Skills: Effective stakeholder management and multitasking ability. 
  • Problem-Solving: Analytical mindset and proactive risk management.
