Job Description

Software Engineer II (Datadog, OpenTelemetry, ELK)

Summary

Guidewire’s Product Development and Operations (PDO) organization powers the cloud platform, analytics, and AI capabilities that help P&C insurers run, adapt, and grow with confidence. Our Data Platform & Analytics team builds and operates the cloud-native data foundation that underpins Guidewire’s products, enabling secure, reliable, and scalable insights for customers worldwide. You’ll join a collaborative, inclusive engineering culture in India, experimenting with modern data technologies to transform InsurTech and support our customers’ mission-critical decisions.

As a Software Engineer II focused on our cloud-native data platform, you will design, build, and operate multi-tenant data and analytics services that are core to Guidewire’s mission of transforming how the world’s P&C insurers do business. You’ll use your expertise in AWS, containers, and data processing to automate deployments, improve observability, and optimize large-scale data pipelines and storage. This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy solving complex distributed systems problems, care deeply about reliability and cost efficiency, and want their work to directly advance Guidewire’s AI, cloud, and data platform priorities within PDO.

Job Description

What you’ll do

  • Build and enhance monitoring and observability dashboards for Guidewire’s cloud-native big data platform using tools such as Datadog, OpenTelemetry, and ELK, improving reliability, uptime, and incident response.

  • Design and implement automation and tooling for continuous deployment and operation of multi-tenant, cloud-native SaaS data services on AWS (for example EMR, Redshift, MSK, RDS, DynamoDB, SNS/SQS, Athena, IAM), ensuring scalable, high-performance data platforms.

  • Develop tooling and frameworks for cost tracking, optimization, and performance tuning of AWS resources used by the Data Platform, aligning with PDO’s focus on efficient, scalable operations and improved gross margin.

  • Improve the incident management lifecycle by creating mechanisms to detect issues early, reduce time to mitigate, and capture learnings that drive higher platform reliability, resilience, and security.

  • Optimize and troubleshoot data pipelines and storage (for example Parquet, Iceberg) for speed, scalability, and resilience across large volumes of multi-tenant data in a cloud-native environment.

  • Implement and continuously strengthen data and platform security controls, including access management and secure-by-design practices for cloud-native services, in partnership with platform and security teams.

  • Monitor and maintain data workflows end to end, ensuring data quality, consistency, and reliability for analytics, AI, and reporting use cases across Guidewire’s products.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (product, engineering, operations) to understand data requirements, shape technical solutions, and support new data-driven capabilities that help insurers modernize and thrive.

  • At Guidewire, we foster a culture of curiosity, innovation, and responsible use of AI—empowering our teams to continuously leverage emerging technologies and data-driven insights to enhance productivity and outcomes.

What you’ll bring

Required:

  • Demonstrated ability to embrace AI and apply it to your current role as well as data-driven insights to drive innovation, productivity, and continuous improvement.

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, including building and operating cloud-native SaaS or data platform services in production.

  • Strong programming skills in at least one of: Python, Java, or Scala, with experience in data processing, backend systems, or distributed data pipelines.

  • Hands-on experience with AWS and its native services (for example EMR, Redshift, MSK, RDS, DynamoDB, SNS, SQS, Athena, IAM) and a solid understanding of how to run them reliably, securely, and cost‑effectively at scale.

  • Practical experience with monitoring and observability tools (for example Datadog, OpenTelemetry, ELK) and building actionable dashboards and alerts that improve platform reliability.

  • Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure and distributed systems concepts, including networking, storage, operating systems, and microservices architectures.

  • Experience with container and orchestration technologies such as Kubernetes, and familiarity with IaaS abstractions like Kubernetes-based platforms, Cloud Foundry, or OpenShift.

  • Knowledge of open data and table formats such as Parquet and Iceberg, and experience with data pipelines and batch or stream processing.

  • Proven problem-solving skills, ownership mindset, and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment.

Preferred:

  • Experience designing or operating large-scale, multi-tenant data platforms or data lakes in the public cloud, with a focus on performance, reliability, and scalability.

  • Background in building CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation for data or platform services, including infrastructure-as-code practices.

  • Experience with securing cloud-native data services (for example encryption, access controls, secrets management, auditability) in line with enterprise and regulatory requirements.

  • Familiarity with cost optimization strategies and FinOps practices for data and analytics workloads on AWS, aligned to PDO’s focus on efficient, scalable operations and measurable customer value.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
