Job Description
Job Purpose
The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs routine and specialized laboratory procedures to provide precise, accurate, and timely data to medical staff for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases. Operating under general supervision, the MLT executes medical laboratory tests across areas such as hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, urinalysis, and immunology while maintaining rigorous quality control standards and strict adherence to biosafety protocols.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Specimen Processing & Handling: Collect, receive, identify, and prepare biological samples (including blood, tissue, and bodily fluids) according to standard operating procedures (SOPs). Ensure accurate labeling and logging into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Testing & Analysis: Perform analytical test procedures on clinical samples utilizing both manual techniques and automated laboratory instruments. Cross-check results against established critical values.
- Quality Control & Assurance: Run daily quality control validations on instruments, reagents, and calibration curves. Document QC metrics, recognize shifts or deviations, and initiate basic troubleshooting or corrective actions.
- Equipment Maintenance: Conduct routine preventative maintenance, cleaning, and calibration of advanced laboratory equipment (e.g., analyzers, centrifuges, microscopes). Document maintenance logs diligently.
- Result Reporting: Accurately input, verify, and release data into the LIS. Promptly flag and escalate critical or panic values to physicians, pathologists, or clinical supervisors in line with reporting policies.
- Inventory & Supply Management: Monitor stock levels of reagents, control materials, and operational supplies. Report shortages early to prevent diagnostic downtime.
