Job Description
AECOM is seeking a highly experienced Grid Integration Head – PMO to lead grid integration strategy and delivery across complex energy programs in India. This role operates at the intersection of engineering, program management, customer interface, and digital transformation, acting as the primary bridge between technical teams, grid operators, regulators, and executive leadership.
The position is responsible for enabling seamless integration of renewable (solar, wind), BESS, PSP, and conventional generation systems with EHV transmission networks and substations (up to 765 kV). The role will also drive grid modernization, digitalization (WAMS/PMU), and advanced analytics, while supporting customer engagement across project lifecycle stages from bid (ITO), execution (OTR), to post-COD performance.
Job Description & Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Customer Interface
- Serve as the primary point of contact for grid-related matters for large-scale (GW+) customers across ITO, OTR, and post-COD phases
- Lead grid integration strategy across solar, wind, BESS, PSP, and hybrid energy systems
- Interface with utilities, grid operators, regulators, and internal leadership for alignment on grid compliance and integration
- Support commercial and bid teams in scope definition, risk assessment, and grid compliance positioning
Power System Studies, Modeling & Simulation
- Lead and oversee advanced power system studies, including:
- Load flow, short-circuit, contingency, and stability (RMS/EMT) analysis
- Develop and validate grid simulation models for:
- Wind turbines, solar inverters, BESS, and hybrid plants
- PSP/hydro and conventional generation systems
- Configure and deliver customer-facing models using:
- PSCAD, PSS/E, PSLF, EMTP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory
- Simulate converter, turbine, and plant-level control interactions to evaluate grid performance and compliance
Transmission, Substation & Grid Modernization
- Lead integration of EHV transmission systems and substations (up to 765 kV), including:
- Grid evacuation planning and interconnection design
- Voltage control, reactive power compensation, and system strength assessment
- Protection coordination and reliability studies
- Drive grid modernization initiatives, including:
- WAMS deployment and PMU integration
- Synchrophasor-based analytics for oscillation detection and disturbance analysis
- Digital substations and SCADA/EMS integration
Grid Code Compliance & Certification
- Lead grid code compliance strategy and execution for renewable, hybrid, PSP, and conventional systems
- Perform country-specific grid code analysis and monitor evolving standards
- Translate grid requirements into:
- Plant control settings and product capability specifications
- Technical inputs for design, procurement, and commissioning
- Support:
- Grid acceptance testing, certification, and issue resolution with grid authorities
- HVRT, LVRT, Fault ride-through (FRT) compliance and dynamic performance validation
Energy Systems Integration & Optimization
- Lead ESS sizing and technology selection (LFP, NMC, Flow) and system configuration
- Define integration strategies for PSP systems, including grid balancing and peak/off-peak optimization
- Optimize hybrid systems (Solar + Wind + BESS + PSP) for:
- Grid stability, flexibility, and dispatchability
- Develop repowering strategies, lifecycle planning, and spares philosophy
Techno-Commercial & Product Integration
- Conduct techno-commercial evaluations and support financial modeling (IRR, LCOE)
- Evaluate revenue streams:
- Energy arbitrage, peak shaving, ancillary services
- Translate grid requirements into product specifications and service offerings
- Work closely with:
- NPI, Services, and Product teams to assess grid compliance risks
- Commercial teams for bid-stage technical positioning
Digital Integration & Advanced Analytics
- Lead digitalization initiatives by:
- Integrating simulation outputs into PMO dashboards
- Leveraging WAMS/PMU data for real-time grid monitoring
- Applying analytics/AI for predictive performance and grid risk management
- Align with AECOM’s Digital Integration Framework
Procurement, Vendor & Documentation Support
- Support RFP preparation, vendor evaluation, and technical bid assessments
- Evaluate OEMs for:
- Grid compliance capability
- Control systems and hybrid integration readiness
- Develop and review technical documents including:
- Grid PRDs, GIDs, technical reports, and position papers
Project Delivery & Continuous Improvement
- Lead preparation of grid study reports, integration strategies, and executive summaries
- Identify gaps in grid-related processes and drive continuous improvement initiatives
- Support multi-project execution through standardized PMO methodologies
Thought Leadership & Industry Engagement
- Represent AECOM in forums on grid integration, wind systems, energy storage, PSP, and smart grids
- Contribute to IEEE/CIGRE publications, standards, and advocacy activities
- Promote innovation and knowledge sharing across global teams
Travel & Site Engagement
- Travel to project sites, substations, and client locations (up to 40%)
Desired Characteristics
- Experience in EHV/UHV Power Transmission and Substation, Solar, BESS, wind turbine systems, converter controls, and plant-level control configurations
- Strong understanding of:
- IBR behavior, fault ride-through (FRT), and grid support functionalities
- Power system stability standards (IEEE 421.x series)
- Experience in:
- Supporting sales/commercial teams and customer engagements
- Preparing and presenting technical documentation
- Exposure to:
- Digital platforms, analytics, and integrated PMO systems
- Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple high-priority tasks
- Ability to work effectively in a multinational, matrix organization
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Electrical / Power Systems Engineering
- Minimum 15+ years of experience in:
- Grid integration and power system studies
- Renewable (wind/solar), storage, and PSP integration
- Transmission and substations (up to 765 kV)
- Strong expertise in:
- Grid simulation and modeling (PSCAD, PSS/E, PSLF, DIgSILENT, EMTP)
- Grid code compliance and plant control systems
- WAMS, PMU, and advanced grid monitoring technologies
- Proven experience in customer-facing roles and high-value project delivery
- Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills
- Willingness to travel up to 40%.
