As a Senior Data Scientist - Generative AI Application Specialist, you will be responsible for building fundamental agentic capabilities and high-level business applications within a fast-moving, experimental environment. This role bridges the gap between technical infrastructure and user experience, collaborating with infrastructure teams to design agents and partnering with product owners to ensure optimal development approaches for desired UX. As a subject matter expert, you will stay at the forefront of Generative AI models and capabilities, influencing technical priorities in a complex enterprise environment while representing the team across the global Roche organization.

The Opportunity:

Application Design & Agentic Development (Primary Focus):

• System Architecture: Design high-level agentic business applications and fundamental capabilities based on an extensible multi-agent infrastructure

• Infrastructure Collaboration: Partner with infrastructure teams to design agents and provide critical feedback to bridge capability gaps

• UX Strategy: Collaborate with product owners to ensure the development approach aligns with and optimizes the desired user experience

• Cutting-Edge Implementation: Maintain a position on the cutting edge of LLMs, agentic flow design, and smooth UX creation

Technical Innovation & Strategic Influence (Primary Focus):

• Subject Matter Expertise: Stay at the forefront of Generative AI models and bring the newest technologies into the team’s workflow

• Strategic Direction: Influence technical decisions and priorities within a complex enterprise environment

• Global Representation: Represent the team’s initiatives and expertise within Genentech and the broader global Roche organization

• Partnership Management: Cultivate and maintain thriving relationships with both internal and external partners

Advanced Technical Execution:

• Observability & Optimization: Master the use of observability tools and evaluation methodologies to monitor and improve agentic systems.

• Performance Engineering: Manage factors impacting system performance, including cost, reliability, and latency.

• Data Mastery: Utilize SQL and AI-generated SQL techniques alongside advanced RAG architectures and document optimization methods like chunking.

People, Coaching & Compliance:

• AI Mentorship: Coach team members and stakeholders to increase their AI proficiency and savvy.

• Leadership Insight: Surface potential systemic issues to leadership to ensure operational excellence.

• Agile Mindset: Embrace a culture of taking risks, failing forward, and compromising based on business priorities.

• Ethical Standards: Ensure all activities comply with laws, regulations, and policies governing Genentech and Roche.

Who you are:

• You are someone with bachelor's degree and 8+ years of experience in a relevant field. Minimum 3 years of experience in building Gen AI products in B2B environments, prompting, data handling, troubleshooting, and trade-offs in agentic design

• Technical Proficiency: Mastery of various LLMs, vector databases, graph databases, and reranking algorithms

• Framework Expertise: Hands-on experience with LangChain, LangGraph, AWS Agentcore, or similar frameworks

• RAG Architecture: Mastery of RAG architecture and document optimization methods such as chunking

• Tools & Protocols: Working knowledge of MCP, A2A protocols, and multimodal Gen AI application building

• Frontend/UI Knowledge: Familiarity with UI tools such as Figma, Angular, or React to support UX-focused development

• Communication: Excellent verbal and written skills, with the ability to present complex technical analyses to non-technical stakeholders

Good to Have

• Multimodal Expertise: Experience with voice-based multimodal Gen AI tools

• Domain Knowledge: Experience in healthcare, pharmaceutical, or highly regulated industries

• Security: Experience with common security protocols in an enterprise environment

• Design: Experience designing UI specifically for enterprise software
