Job Description

  • DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESSample Collection and HandlingCollect blood and other specimens as per prescribed procedures.
  • Verify patient identification before specimen collection.
  • Label specimens accurately and ensure proper documentation.
  • Transport and store specimens under prescribed conditions.
  • Reject unsuitable specimens as per laboratory policy and inform the concerned clinician.
  • Laboratory TestingPerform laboratory investigations as per standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Operate laboratory equipment and analyzers competently.
  • Conduct routine hematology, biochemistry, serology, immunology, clinical pathology, microbiology, and other tests as authorized.
  • Ensure timely reporting of test results.
  • Quality ControlPerform internal quality control procedures as per schedule.
  • Document quality control results and corrective actions.
  • Participate in External Quality Assurance Programs (EQAS) whenever applicable.
  • Report abnormal quality control findings to the Laboratory In-Charge.
  • Equipment ManagementPerform daily maintenance and calibration checks of laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain equipment logbooks and records.
  • Immediately report equipment malfunction to the Laboratory In-Charge.
  • Ensure proper functioning of analyzers before commencing testing.
  • Documentation and RecordsMaintain laboratory registers, worksheets, reports, and electronic records.
  • Ensure confidentiality and security of patient information.
  • Maintain traceability of samples and reports.
  • Complete all documentation accurately and timely.
  • Critical Value ReportingImmediately communicate critical laboratory values to the concerned clinician as per hospital policy.
  • Document all critical value communications.
  • Infection Prevention and SafetyFollow universal precautions and biomedical waste management guidelines.
  • Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Adhere to laboratory safety policies and procedures.
  • Report spills, accidents, needle-stick injuries, and safety incidents promptly.
  • Inventory ManagementMonitor stock levels of reagents, consumables, and laboratory supplies.
  • Inform the Laboratory In-Charge regarding shortages.
  • Ensure proper storage of reagents and kits as per manufacturer recommendations.
  • Patient Care and CommunicationMaintain professional and courteous behavior with patients and attendants.
  • Explain specimen collection procedures when required.
  • Address patient concerns within the scope of responsibility.
  • ComplianceComply with NABH standards, hospital policies, and statutory regulations.
  • Participate in audits, quality improvement activities, and departmental meetings.
  • Maintain professional ethics and confidentiality at all times.

AUTHORITYThe Medical Laboratory Technician is authorized to:

  • Collect and process laboratory specimens.
  • Perform laboratory investigations within the scope of training and competency.
  • Report routine laboratory results as per laboratory authorization matrix.
  • Escalate abnormal findings, equipment failures, and quality concerns to the Laboratory In-Charge.
