Job Description for Safety OƯ icer ( Passenger Boarding Bridges in Airports)

Passenger Boarding Bridge (PPB) Operation Safety

 Enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the safe docking, undocking,

and retraction of all passenger boarding bridges across the airfield.

 Audit operator certifications regularly to ensure only licensed, trained, and

medically fit personnel operate the PPBs and associated equipment.

Oversee Compliance to following Safety Features by conducting Periodic

Audits:

1) Exclusion zone safety by ensuring the entire bridge movement area is

completely clear of ground support equipment, vehicles, and personnel before

operation.

2)Monitor auto-levelling systems continuously during active aircraft boarding

and deboarding to prevent structural strain or damage to the aircraft fuselag

 Conduct incident investigations for any structural near-misses, airframe

contacts, or operational errors, delivering comprehensive root-cause analysis

reports.

PPB Maintenance Safety & Integrity

 Govern preventive maintenance safety frameworks, ensuring all mechanical,

electrical, and hydraulic inspections are performed under strict Lockout-Tagout

(LOTO) protocols.

 Inspect critical structural components including vertical lift columns, drive

rotas, canopy assemblies, and wheels to identify structural fatigue or fluid

leaks early.

 Manage slip, trip, and fall hazards within the tunnel walkways, cabins, and

transition ramps by maintaining non-slip flooring and functional levelling

hinges.

 Implement severe weather protocols for securing, anchoring, and locking

down PPBs during high-velocity crosswinds, thunderstorms, or low-visibility

conditions.

 Validate emergency system functionality through routine testing of emergency

stop buttons, backup power systems, manual retraction gears, and dead-man

switches.

 Supervise third-party maintenance vendors on the ramp, ensuring their

technicians strictly adhere to the airport’s airside safety and airside driving

regulations.

Regulatory Compliance & Cross-Functional Coordination

 Ensure DGCA and OEM compliance by aligning all operation and maintenance

schedules with manufacturer specifications and national civil aviation

guidelines.

 Maintain detailed safety logs and digital maintenance records for every PPB

unit to present during internal, external, and regulatory safety audits.

 Deliver specialized safety briefings and hazard awareness training to airline

staƯ and ground handlers regarding the risks of the PPB-to-aircraft interface

zone.

Core Job Responsibilities ( Primary)

 Enforce PPB safety zones by ensuring exclusion zones are strictly maintained free

of Ground Support Equipment (GSE) and vehicles during docking and undocking.

 Standardize operator audits to verify that Passenger Boarding Bridge operators

adhere to OEM alignment, speed, and safety bumper protocols to prevent airframe

damage.

 Mitigate slip and trip hazards within the PPB auto-levelling cab and walkway

transitions during adverse weather conditions like heavy rain or crosswinds.

 Lead DGCA audit preparedness for Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) pertaining to

Aerodrome Standards, Ground Handling, and Airside Safety Clearances..

 Deliver safety training and competency check programs for PBB O & M teams.

 Analyze safety data to identify operational trends and implement corrective

actions.

 Collaborate with airlines and stakeholders to optimize ramp safety and

turnarounds.

 Oversee Breath Analyzer (BA) compliance programs for all airside personnel and

ground handlers in strict accordance with DGCA CAR guidelines.

Airside Driving Permit (ADP) & TraƯ ic Control

 Govern the ADP framework by overseeing the complete testing, vetting, issuance,

and points-based penalty system for airside driver licences for PBB & Aerial

platform crew

 Execute speed trap and enforcement blitzes on the apron and taxiway service

roads to eliminate reckless driving and unauthorized vehicle movements.

Maintenance Safety & Infrastructure Protection

 Authorize Hot Work and Airside Construction permits, enforcing safety

barricading and lighting standards for ongoing maintenance activities.
