Shop Assistant

Job Summary:

We are looking for a friendly, reliable, and enthusiastic Shop Assistant to help with the day-to-day running of our bookshop. You’ll play an important role in creating a positive experience for children and their families, assisting customers, and supporting events and store operations.

Key Responsibilities:

Customer Service

• Greet customers warmly and assist them in selecting suitable books for children of different ages.
• Provide recommendations and share book insights with parents, teachers, and young readers.
• Handle billing and operate the point-of-sale (POS) system.

Store Operations

• Help maintain the cleanliness, organisation, and visual appeal of the shop.
• Unpack and shelve new stock; assist in stock-taking and inventory maintenance.
• Monitor inventory levels and inform the manager of low-stock items.

Events & Engagement

• Support in-store activities such as storytelling sessions, book readings, and workshops.
• Help set up and manage school book fairs and community outreach events.

Administrative Support

• Assist in maintaining daily sales records and other basic documentation.
• Handle basic queries over the phone, email, or in person.

Key Skills & Requirements:

• Minimum qualification: Degree or equivalent.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, approachable manner.
• Interest in children’s books and reading.
• Ability to work weekends and during school/public events, as needed.
• Reliable, punctual, and a good team player.
• Basic computer literacy (POS system, Excel, email).
