Manager Engineering - Controls

POSITION SUMMARY 

  • This position is responsible for establishing, building, and managing the Controls Engineering team at the Global Engineering Centre (GEC) in Pune, India. The Team Lead/Manager will lead a multi-functional controls team encompassing BMS design, fire alarm systems, security systems, controls testing, and controls documentation for modular buildings and critical infrastructure projects globally.
  • The role requires developing control systems project designs to meet all required input data and requirements for producing sustainable and functional control systems and building equipment supervision designs. The team will manage engineering model design in Revit and prepare standard control documentation such as plans, sections, elevation views, I/O lists, riser diagrams, sequence of operations, equipment technical specifications, and material requirements.
  • This is a critical leadership role that requires building the team from the ground up, establishing processes and standards, and positioning GEC Pune as a Centre of Excellence for electrical engineering delivery supporting global projects.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Team Building & People Management
    • Build and scale the controls engineering team at GEC Pune from the ground up, defining hiring plans and team structure across three sub-functions:
    • Controls Design Engineers (BMS, Fire Alarm, Security Systems)
    • Controls Testing Engineers (FAT, functional testing, validation)
    • Controls Documentation Engineers (documentation quality, as-built records)
    • Develop and execute recruitment strategy to attract top controls/automation engineering talent in the Pune region
    • Establish structured onboarding programs, training roadmaps, and technical skill development plans for all team members
    • Conduct regular performance reviews, set individual and team goals, and drive career development and succession planning
    • Foster a high-performance culture aligned with core values: Safety, Integrity, Respect, Teamwork, and Diversity & Inclusion
    • Manage team capacity planning, workload allocation, and resource utilization across multiple concurrent projects
    • Mentor and coach engineers to develop technical expertise in BMS, PLC, DDC, SCADA, fire alarm, and security systems
    • Lead design control and mentor colleagues, using knowledge and experience to fulfill requirements set by project tasks
    • Drive employee engagement and retention through meaningful work assignments, recognition, and growth opportunities
  • Technical Leadership & Engineering Delivery
    • Lead creation of conceptual and detailed project solutions for control systems
    • Ensure the team delivers high-quality controls project documentation including: riser and network diagrams, I/O lists, application and functional diagrams, sequence of operations, fire alarm system project drawings, security systems drawings, descriptions, instructions, material submittals, presentations, and marketing materials
    • Oversee BMS design for modular buildings (small to large scale) according to input data, material and equipment specifications, and creation of construction documentation
    • Define fire alarm system design requirements and security system design requirements
    • Drive adoption of design tools including Revit, AutoCAD, EPLAN, SQL, PLC/DDC software packages, and SCADA software packages across the team
    • Ensure all designs follow international, national, and company standards and good engineering practices
    • Manage development of defined documents according to Document Lists (DLIST)
    • Oversee creation of installation and maintenance documentation
    • Personally handle the most complex controls design challenges, setting technical benchmarks for the team
  • Controls Testing & Validation Oversight
    • Oversee execution of functional and integration testing of BMS, PLC, DDC, and SCADA systems
    • Ensure team prepares and executes test cases, test procedures, and FAT documentation
    • Manage Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and internal system testing activities
    • Ensure identification, documentation, and tracking of control system defects and non-conformities
    • Oversee verification of correct implementation of I/O lists, alarms, and sequences of operation
    • Coordinate issue resolution between Controls Design Engineers, Testing Engineers, and system integrators
    • Ensure maintenance of complete testing records, logs, and evidence
  • Documentation Quality & Management
    • Ensure controls documentation is complete, accurate, and aligned with approved designs and as-built systems
    • Oversee preparation and maintenance of control system documentation including I/O lists, sequences of operation, network diagrams, and control schematics
    • Manage development of installation, operation, and maintenance manuals for control systems
    • Ensure preparation, update, and management of as-built documentation following testing and commissioning
    • Enforce compliance with project Document Lists (DLIST) and internal documentation standards
    • Maintain structured document version control, naming conventions, and file organization standards
  • Design Review, Verification & Quality
    • Review and approve project documentation for BMS, fire alarm, and security systems
    • Approve or reject technically received supplier bids/offers
    • Approve or reject proposed changes by subcontractors on approved workshop documentation
    • Control and support BMS, fire alarm, and security systems integrators
    • Ensure team performs accurate specifications for optimal component/material selection
    • Conduct design reviews and technical audits to maintain engineering quality
    • Specify Bill of Materials and services required for project execution
    • Specify necessary certificates for materials needed to be ordered
    • Approve control system test results for completeness prior to release
    • Request corrective actions for failed tests or deviations from expected behavior
  • Project & Stakeholder Management
    • Coordinate with global Project Lead Engineers, Chief Project Engineers, and Project Managers to understand project requirements and allocate GEC resources
    • Participate in and lead kick-off meetings, regular project team meetings, and on-site coordination meetings as GEC Pune controls engineering representative
    • Report project status, team performance metrics, and capacity utilization to senior leadership
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for global stakeholders seeking controls engineering support from GEC Pune
    • Initiate Requests for Information (RFI) when additional clarification is needed from global teams or customers
    • Support suppliers with additional information during bidding phases and provide technical evaluation of offers
  • Cross-functional Collaboration
    • Drive proactive cooperation with electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, structural, and fire protection disciplines during project execution
    • Collaborate with Manufacturing and Site Deployment engineering teams
    • Cooperate with Site Managers during assembly, providing technical solutions to raised issues
    • Collaborate with Quality Control during quality control of components/systems and assembly on site
    • Collaborate with Commissioning engineers on testing documentation development
    • Lead and support internal testing and FAT activities
    • Provide technical support to subcontractors and installers during production/assembly
    • In factory, on-site and/or remote commissioning and deployment of BMS (oversight and support)
    • Coordinate with global engineering centres for knowledge sharing, standardization, and best practice alignment
  • Process Improvement & Innovation
    • Establish and drive continuous improvement programs for controls design, testing, and documentation processes
    • Implement knowledge management systems for lessons learned, standard control libraries, and reusable templates
    • Introduce automation in repetitive engineering tasks to improve team productivity
    • Champion innovation initiatives including new protocols, technologies, and integration methodologies
    • Benchmark GEC Pune performance against global engineering centres and drive improvements
    • Define and track engineering KPIs: on-time delivery, quality metrics, testing pass rates, productivity, and utilization

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (Automation/Controls specialization); Master's degree is a plus
  • Experience: 12+ years of progressive experience in controls/automation engineering (BMS, PLC, SCADA, DDC), with minimum 3-4 years in a team leadership or management role
  • Industry Experience: Experience in modular buildings, data centre infrastructure, critical facilities, or similar project-based engineering environments preferred
  • Language: Excellent command of English (written and verbal); Hindi and Marathi proficiency preferred
  • Software Proficiency:
    • Revit, AutoCAD, EPLAN (required)
    • SQL, PLC/DDC software packages (required)
    • SCADA software packages (required)
    • MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio)
    • PLM/PDM systems experience preferred
  • Technical Skills:
    • Programming (PLC, DDC, SCADA)
    • Communication protocols: Modbus, SNMP, BACnet, Ethernet networks
    • BMS system design, setup, and commissioning
    • Fire alarm system design and validation
    • Security system design and validation
    • FAT planning and execution
  • Standards Knowledge: IEC, EN, NFPA (fire alarm), local building codes, BMS/controls industry standards
  • Management Skills:
    • Proven ability to build and scale engineering teams
