Job Description

Software Engineer II - Cloud

You’re ready to gain the skills and experience needed to grow within your role and advance your career — and we have the perfect software engineering opportunity for you.

As a Software Engineer II at JPMorganChase within the Consumer and Community Banking - Chase Travel, you are part of an agile team that works to enhance, design, and deliver the software components of the firm’s state-of-the-art technology products in a secure, stable, and scalable way.
As an emerging member of a software engineering team, you design, build, and operate secure, scalable services on AWS. You will collaborate with developers, architects, and SREs to deliver high‑quality software, automate cloud infrastructure, and improve reliability and developer productivity.

This is a hands‑on role with ownership across design, implementation, testing, deployment, and operations in a highly regulated environment.

Job Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain cloud‑native services and APIs using languages such as Java, Python, or Node.js, adhering to clean code and testing best practices.
  • Build and automate AWS infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (CloudFormation and/or Terraform), applying modular, reusable patterns integrated with CI/CD.
  • Implement event‑driven and microservices architectures leveraging AWS services such as Lambda, ECS/EKS, API Gateway, SQS/SNS, Step Functions, and DynamoDB/RDS.
  • Deliver secure and compliant solutions by applying AWS security best practices (IAM least privilege, KMS encryption, parameter management, VPC design, network controls, Secrets Manager) and aligning to internal controls and policies.
  • Create and maintain CI/CD pipelines (Git-based workflows, AWS CodePipeline/CodeBuild or Jenkins/GitHub Actions) with automated unit, integration, and security tests.
  • Monitor and improve service reliability with CloudWatch, OpenTelemetry, distributed tracing, logging, metrics, and automated alerting; participate in on‑call rotations as needed.
  • Optimize performance and cost via right‑sizing, autoscaling, caching, and efficient data access patterns.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams, participate in code reviews, conduct root cause analyses, and contribute to engineering standards and documentation.

Required qualifications, capabilities and skills

  • Formal training or certification on software engineering concepts and 2+ years applied experience
  • Professional software engineering experience, including building and operating services in AWS.
  • Proficiency in at least one modern programming language (e.g., Java, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or Go) and familiarity with REST/gRPC API design and testing.
  • Hands‑on experience with AWS core services (e.g., EC2, Lambda, API Gateway, S3, IAM, CloudWatch, VPC, RDS/DynamoDB) and Infrastructure as Code (CloudFormation and/or Terraform).
  • Practical knowledge of containerization and orchestration (Docker; ECS or EKS/Kubernetes).
Experience with CI/CD practices and tools, including automated testing and deployment.
  • Strong understanding of networking fundamentals (VPCs, subnets, security groups, NAT, Route 53) and security best practices.
  • Solid skills in troubleshooting, observability, and performance tuning in distributed systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • AWS certification (e.g., AWS Certified Developer – Associate, Solutions Architect – Associate/Professional).
  • Experience with event streaming and messaging (Kafka, Kinesis, SQS/SNS) and data stores (Aurora, DynamoDB, Redis/ElastiCache).
  • Exposure to site reliability engineering practices (SLIs/SLOs, error budgets, chaos testing).
  • Familiarity with DevSecOps tooling (SAST, DAST, dependency scanning), secrets management, and policy‑as‑code (e.g., Open Policy Agent).
  • Experience with multi‑account/multi‑region architectures and landing zone patterns.
