An Assistant Manager Interior supports the Interior Manager in overseeing interior fit-out projects, managing design execution, coordinating trades, and ensuring spaces are completed to specified quality standards and client requirements.

Core Responsibilities

Project Coordination and Execution The Assistant Manager coordinates daily interior fit-out activities including partitions, ceiling systems, flooring, wall finishes, joinery, fixtures, and furnishings. They supervise interior contractors, vendors, and installation teams, ensuring work aligns with approved designs, schedules, and budgets. They manage workflow sequencing to optimize productivity and minimize disruptions between trades.

Design Implementation and Review They translate design concepts into execution plans, reviewing shop drawings, material samples, and mock-ups for compliance with design intent. They coordinate with interior designers and architects to clarify design details, resolve ambiguities, and address site conditions that differ from original assumptions. They ensure finishes, colors, textures, and specifications match approved design documents.

Material Selection and Procurement Support The Assistant Manager assists in material sourcing, evaluating supplier options for quality, cost, and lead times. They review material submittals, verify compliance with specifications and building codes (fire ratings, sustainability certifications), and coordinate approvals with design teams and clients. They track material deliveries to prevent schedule delays.

Quality Control and Finishing Standards Conducting regular site inspections verifies installation quality and workmanship standards for all interior elements. They check alignment, levelness, finish consistency, joint detailing, and fixture installations. They identify defects or deviations early, coordinating rectification before work progresses. They ensure installations meet brand standards for commercial interiors or design expectations for residential projects.

Trade Coordination Interior work intersects with MEP, structural, and façade systems. The Assistant Manager coordinates with other discipline managers to resolve conflicts, ensure proper integration of services (lighting fixtures, HVAC grilles, electrical outlets) within interior elements, and maintain aesthetic continuity. They manage access schedules when multiple trades work in confined spaces.

Client and Stakeholder Management They serve as a liaison between clients, designers, contractors, and project management teams. They attend design meetings, present progress updates, coordinate client walkthroughs for material approvals, and address client feedback. They manage expectations regarding design feasibility, costs, and schedule impacts of design changes.

Budget and Cost Management The Assistant Manager tracks interior fit-out costs against budgets, reviews contractor quotations, and identifies cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality. They assess cost implications of design changes, coordinate value engineering exercises when required, and process payment applications for completed interior work.

Schedule Management They develop detailed interior work schedules, coordinate milestone dates with overall project timelines, and monitor progress against targets. They identify critical path activities, flag potential delays, and implement recovery plans to maintain schedule adherence. They coordinate phased handovers for projects requiring early occupancy of certain areas.

Compliance and Documentation Ensuring interior installations comply with building codes, accessibility standards, fire safety regulations, and sustainability requirements is essential. They maintain comprehensive records including approved drawings, material certificates, installation manuals, warranty documents, and photographic progress records. They prepare punch lists and coordinate defect rectification before final handover.

Vendor and Contractor Management They manage relationships with joinery contractors, flooring specialists, ceiling installers, painters, and furnishing suppliers. They conduct pre-qualification assessments, coordinate site access and logistics, monitor performance, and resolve contractual issues. They ensure vendors meet safety protocols and site regulations.

Innovation and Problem-Solving When design challenges arise—difficult site conditions, material availability issues, installation constraints—they develop practical solutions. They explore alternative materials or methods that achieve design objectives while meeting budget and schedule requirements. They implement lessons learned from previous projects to improve execution efficiency.

Key Skills Required

Strong knowledge of interior construction methods, materials, finishes, and joinery systems is fundamental. Understanding of design principles, spatial planning, and aesthetic sensibilities enables effective design translation. Project management capabilities, attention to detail, and coordination skills ensure successful multi-trade integration.

Proficiency with design software (AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revit) and specification tools supports communication with design teams. Strong interpersonal skills facilitate collaboration with diverse stakeholders—from creative designers to practical contractors.

The role demands someone who can balance creative design aspirations with construction realities, delivering high-quality interior spaces that meet functional requirements, aesthetic expectations, and project constraints.
