VMC Machine Operator

A VMC (Vertical Machining Center) Machine Operator sets up, runs, and maintains CNC milling machines to manufacture precision metal or plastic components. They translate engineering drawings into finished parts by loading raw materials, selecting tools, and ensuring high dimensional accuracy through routine quality checks.

Key Responsibilities

• Machine Setup: Load fixtures, set cutting tools, and input tool offsets to prepare the VMC machine for operation.
• Operation: Run and monitor machining processes (milling, drilling, tapping), modifying feed/speed rates and basic G-code or M-code as needed.
• Quality Control: Use precision measuring instruments (e.g., Vernier calipers, micrometers, height gauges) to verify that finished parts meet tight tolerance specifications.
• Maintenance: Perform routine machine upkeep (lubrication, cleaning) and troubleshoot minor operational issues to minimize downtime.
• Documentation: Record production numbers, inspect job cards, and report any tool wear or mechanical failures.

Essential Qualifications

• Education: ITI or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.
• Experience: Typically 1 to 5+ years of hands-on VMC/CNC operating and setting experience.
• Blueprint Reading: Strong ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and blueprints.
• Technical Knowledge: Understanding of cutting tools, machining parameters, and basic G/M code programming.
