Job Title: Electrical Testing Protection Engineer
Job Summary:
The Electrical Testing Protection Engineer is responsible for ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of electrical protection systems within power generation, transmission, and distribution networks. They play a critical role in designing, testing, and maintaining protective Equipment systems, equipment, and settings to safeguard electrical assets and personnel. The Electrical Testing Protection Engineer collaborates closely with engineering teams, operations personnel, and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with industry standards and best practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Protection System Design: Collaborate with design engineers to develop and implement protective Equipment schemes and systems that safeguard electrical equipment, circuits, and assets against faults, overloads, and other abnormal conditions.
- Testing and Commissioning: Conduct testing, commissioning, and validation of protective relay systems, including relay calibration, Equipment functional testing, and coordination studies, to ensure proper operation and coordination with other protection devices.
- Fault Analysis: Perform fault analysis, relay coordination studies, and system simulations to assess the performance and reliability of protective Equipment systems under various operating conditions and fault scenarios.
- Settings Configuration: Develop and optimize relay settings, coordination parameters, and protection schemes based on system requirements, equipment characteristics, and industry standards (e.g., ANSI, IEC).
- Equipment Inspection: Inspect and evaluate protective relay equipment, components, and installations for compliance with design specifications, manufacturer recommendations, and safety standards.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that protective relay systems adhere to regulatory requirements, industry standards (e.g., NERC, IEEE), and best practices for reliability, cybersecurity, and personnel safety.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of protective relay settings, test results, as-built drawings, and documentation, providing clear documentation for audits, inspections, and regulatory reporting.
- Training and Education: Provide training and technical support to operations personnel, maintenance teams, and other stakeholders on the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of protective relay systems.
- Emergency Response: Respond promptly to relay malfunctions, system disturbances, and emergency situations, coordinating with operational teams to restore normal operations safely and efficiently.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Electrical Engineering Background: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, with a focus on power systems, protection, or control engineering.
- Protection Relay Expertise: In-depth knowledge of protective relay principles, types (e.g., electromechanical, solid-state), applications, and testing methodologies.
- Testing and Commissioning Skills: Proficiency in conducting relay testing, calibration, and commissioning activities using specialized testing equipment and software tools.
- Analytical Abilities: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to analyze relay performance data, diagnose faults, and optimize protection settings for system reliability and efficiency.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with regulatory requirements, standards, and guidelines governing protective relaying, including NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) standards, IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) standards, and regional grid codes.
- Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to convey technical information, present findings, and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.
- Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail in testing, documentation, and analysis to ensure accuracy, reliability, and compliance with industry standards.
- Project Management: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines while maintaining quality and safety standards.
- Team Collaboration: Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with engineers, technicians, operators, and regulatory agencies to achieve common goals and objectives.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience: Prior experience in electrical protection engineering, relay testing, or power system operations within utilities, consulting firms, or industrial facilities.
- Software Skills: Proficiency in relay testing software, power system simulation tools (e.g., ETAP, PSCAD), and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems for data analysis, simulation, and monitoring purposes.
