Job Description
EHS Specialist
Purpose of the Role:
To develop, implement, and continuously improve Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) systems across Karo Sambhav's operations, collection centres, warehouses, logistics interfaces, and authorized recycling partner facilities. The role is responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable environmental and occupational safety regulations, promoting safe handling of e-waste and other regulated waste streams, minimizing operational risks, and fostering a strong safety culture aligned with Karo Sambhav's mission of advancing India's circular economy.
Key Responsibility Areas:
- Conduct risk assessments (HIRA/JSA) across collection centers, warehouses, sorting facilities, logistics operations, recycling partner sites, and field activities; implement risk mitigation measures and monitor timely closure of corrective actions.
- Develop, review, and implement EHS Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) covering e-waste handling, waste segregation, storage, labelling, manual material handling, ergonomics, battery and hazardous waste management, chemical handling, fire safety, spill response, emergency preparedness, and contractor safety.
- Ensure compliance with applicable statutory requirements including the E-Waste (Management) Rules, Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, Battery Waste Management Rules, Factories Act and State Factory Rules (where applicable), Occupational Safety, Health & Working Conditions (OSHWC) Code, Fire Safety Regulations, Motor Vehicle safety requirements, and other relevant environmental and labour legislations.
- Coordinate with CPCB, SPCBs, Pollution Control Authorities, Fire Departments, Local Authorities, and other regulatory agencies during inspections, statutory reporting, audits, and compliance reviews.
- Conduct routine workplace safety inspections, behavioural safety observations, and internal EHS audits across operational facilities and partner locations; track corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) until effective closure.
- Lead incident, near-miss, unsafe condition, and environmental event reporting; conduct root cause analysis (RCA), recommend preventive measures, and maintain accurate incident records and performance dashboards.
- Plan and deliver EHS induction programmes, refresher training sessions, toolbox talks, and awareness campaigns for employees, contract workers, logistics partners, collection centre staff, recyclers, waste handlers, and other stakeholders.
- Collaborate with Operations, Logistics, Outreach, Corporate Partnerships, and Recycling teams to ensure safe transportation, loading and unloading practices, vehicle safety compliance, route risk management, and environmentally sound handling of materials.
- Support establishment and onboarding of new collection centres and operational facilities by reviewing EHS infrastructure, statutory requirements, emergency preparedness, signage, storage layouts, and safety controls.
- Monitor environmental performance including waste segregation, hazardous waste storage, battery handling, emissions, dust, noise, housekeeping, spill prevention, and pollution control measures in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Ensure availability, inspection, maintenance, and periodic testing of PPE, fire protection systems, spill kits, first aid equipment, emergency response materials, and other safety infrastructure.
- Conduct emergency preparedness programmes including fire drills, evacuation exercises, spill response drills, and first aid training; coordinate with external emergency response agencies whenever required.
- Maintain comprehensive EHS documentation including statutory records, permits, inspection reports, risk registers, HIRA/JSA reports, Safety Data Sheet (SDS) library, training records, medical surveillance records (where applicable), audit reports, incident investigations, and compliance trackers.
- Support implementation and continual improvement of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 Management Systems through documentation, audits, corrective actions, and management review processes.
- Analyse EHS performance data, identify trends, recommend improvement initiatives, and contribute to sustainability reporting, operational excellence, and continuous improvement programmes.
- Engage with corporate clients, government agencies, NGOs, collection partners, recyclers, Producer Responsibility Organisations (PROs), and community stakeholders to promote safe environmental practices and regulatory compliance.
- Ensure cost-effective implementation of EHS programmes while minimizing operational risks, environmental impact, incidents, and business disruptions.
- Desired Candidate ProfileBachelor's degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Industrial Safety, Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Management, or a related discipline.
- Post Graduate Diploma/Diploma in Industrial Safety, Fire & Safety, Environment Management, or equivalent qualification preferred.
- 2–6 years of relevant EHS experience in e-waste management, waste management, recycling, environmental services, logistics, warehousing, manufacturing, FMCG, or industrial operations.
- Strong knowledge of Indian environmental and occupational safety legislation, statutory compliance requirements, and EPR ecosystem.
- Hands-on experience in conducting HIRA/JSA, incident investigations, root cause analysis, CAPA implementation, workplace inspections, statutory compliance, and EHS audits.
- Experience working with collection centres, warehouses, recyclers, logistics operations, and contractor management will be preferred.
- Ability to conduct training programmes for diverse stakeholder groups including employees, contractors, informal sector workers, and external partners.
- Strong documentation, reporting, analytical, communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office, digital reporting platforms, inspection tools, and mobile applications.
- Fluency in English and Hindi; knowledge of regional languages will be an added advantage.
- Willingness to travel extensively across operational locations in North India.
Certifications:
- Auditor certification in ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 – Mandatory.
- NEBOSH, IOSH, Fire & Safety, or Industrial Safety certifications will be an added advantage.
