Refrigeration Engineer (Ammonia Plant and Freon Plant)

Reports to: Director / Facility Head

Location: Sagar Multipurpose Storage Private Limited, Jayshree complex, Alamapur, Howrah

Role purpose

In Charge of the refrigeration system end to end — compressors, condensers, evaporators, and controls — keeping rooms at target temperature reliably, safely, and energy-efficiently.

Key responsibilities

Compressors and prime movers

• Operate, monitor, and maintain reciprocating/screw ammonia and freon compressors (e.g. bitzer, MYCOM), including oil management, valve and bearing servicing, vibration checks, and overhauls.
• Maintain logs of suction/discharge pressures, temperatures, oil levels, and running hours; troubleshoot abnormal readings.

Condensing units and heat rejection

• Maintain evaporative condensers / condensing units and cooling towers — spray nozzles, fans, water treatment, scaling, and airflow.
• Address high head pressure and inefficient heat rejection.

Evaporators and cold rooms

• Service evaporators/air units: defrost cycles, fan motors, drain lines, and frost/icing problems caused by door infiltration.
• Diagnose and correct temperature deviations across deep-freeze and chiller rooms.

System integrity, safety, and efficiency

• Conduct ammonia and freon leak detection, manage refrigerant charge, and maintain pressure relief valves, oil separators, receivers, and liquid lines.
• Enforce ammonia safety protocols (PPE, gas detection, emergency response) and statutory compliance (PESO/factory norms as applicable).
• Optimise suction pressure, defrost timing, and load matching to reduce energy consumption (kWh per cu ft / per tonne).
• Maintain PLC/refrigeration controls and temperature monitoring systems.
• Plan preventive maintenance, manage critical refrigeration spares, and coordinate specialist vendors.

Qualifications & experience

• ITI / Diploma in Mechanical or Refrigeration & Air Conditioning (B.Tech a plus).
• 5+ years operating and maintaining industrial ammonia (NH₃) refrigeration — cold storage, ice plants, dairy, or process cooling.
• Direct experience with reciprocating/screw compressors and evaporative condensers.
